Job Summary and Qualifications
The PPS Coordinator (Prospective Payment System) manages the completion and submission of patient assessment forms for inpatient rehabilitation units to ensure correct reimbursement and government compliance.
"PPS" is the system Medicare uses to pay facilities a set amount based on patient care needs. This role focuses heavily on the Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility Patient Assessment Instrument (IRF-PAI).
Key Responsibilities
Assessment Management: Coordinate, complete, and submit IRF-PAI patient assessments within required time frames.
Documentation Review: Check clinical records for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with federal guidelines.
Team Collaboration: Work with doctors, nurses, and therapists to validate patient data and verify proper patient classification.
Auditing: Conduct regular chart audits to ensure billing and clinical documentation match.
Staff Education: Teach clinical staff about documentation rules and best practices. [1, 2]
Qualifications and Requirements
Licensure: Current license as a Registered Nurse (RN), Physical Therapist (PT), Occupational Therapist (OT), or Speech Therapist (ST).
Experience: At least two years of clinical experience in an acute care hospital or inpatient rehab setting (inpatient rehab is preferred).
Skills: Strong understanding of medical documentation, federal rules, and record auditing.
