Position Overview:
As a Faculty Development Specialist at Galen College of Nursing, you will support faculty growth and instructional effectiveness through onboarding, mentoring, classroom observation, coaching, faculty development, and data-informed support. Working collaboratively with campus academic leadership provides individualized and campus-based support designed to strengthen teaching practices, student engagement, and student learning.
The FDS provides focused support to new faculty, faculty teaching courses for the first time, and faculty identified through observation, student feedback, course outcomes, or academic leadership as benefiting from additional instructional development. The role promotes a culture of continuous improvement by helping faculty recognize strengths, implement evidence-based teaching practices, and demonstrate continued growth in teaching effectiveness.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provides structured onboarding, mentoring, and ongoing support for newly hired faculty.
- Supports faculty teaching a course for the first time through proactive preparation, coaching, and appropriate follow-up.
- Collaborates with academic leadership to identify faculty-development needs and coordinate timely support.
- Conducts faculty observations across instructional modalities using approved observation tools, with priority given to new faculty, faculty teaching a course for the first time, faculty teaching high-risk courses, and faculty identified as needing additional instructional support.
- Provides timely, specific, constructive, and actionable feedback that recognizes strengths and identifies opportunities for growth.
- Provides individualized coaching to strengthen teaching effectiveness, student engagement, active learning, classroom management, formative assessment, instructional technology, and other evidence-based teaching practices.
- Conducts appropriate follow-up coaching and observations to evaluate implementation of recommendations, recognize improvement, and identify continued support needs.
- Uses classroom observations, faculty and student feedback, course attrition, student performance, and other available outcome data to identify faculty-development needs and priorities.
- Collaborates with academic leadership to develop targeted faculty-development interventions in response to identified needs.
- Monitors faculty-development interventions and uses available evidence to evaluate faculty progress and effectiveness of support.
- Communicates significant instructional trends, faculty-development needs, intervention progress, and relevant outcomes to academic leadership.
- Collaborates to develop and deliver workshops, training, learning communities, resources, and other faculty-development opportunities aligned with identified needs.
- Promotes evidence-based teaching practices, adult-learning principles, student-engagement strategies, and effective use of educational technology.
- Supports faculty participation in required and recommended professional-development activities.
- Assists with campus-based and college-wide faculty-development initiatives.
- Serves as a campus-based faculty-development resource and builds collaborative relationships with faculty, Program Directors, Deans, course leaders, and other academic partners.
- Maintains appropriate documentation of faculty observations, coaching, development activities, and follow-up.
- Communicates significant or persistent instructional concerns to appropriate academic leadership with supporting information and recommended next steps.
- Maintains a consistent campus presence and remains accessible to faculty for mentoring, coaching, consultation, and instructional support.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Performance Expectations
The Faculty Development Specialist is expected to demonstrate effective performance through: Successful onboarding and ongoing support of new faculty. Timely completion of prioritized faculty observations and meaningful written feedback. Consistent coaching, documentation, and appropriate follow-up. Evidence of faculty growth and implementation of recommended teaching practices. Effective preparation and support of faculty teaching courses for the first time. Faculty-development programming responsive to identified campus and institutional needs. Effective use of data to identify priorities and guide faculty-development interventions. Positive faculty and leadership feedback regarding the quality and usefulness of FDS support. Contribution to improved teaching effectiveness and relevant course and student outcomes.
Position Requirements:
- Education: Graduate degree in nursing from an accredited institution required.
- Experience: Minimum of three years of successful teaching experience in nursing education required. Experience in faculty mentoring, coaching, onboarding, or professional development preferred. Experience using classroom observation, student outcomes, course-performance data, or faculty/student feedback to guide faculty development is preferred.
- Special Qualifications: Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) credential preferred. Experience with Canvas or a comparable learning management system required.
- Travel: Occasional travel to other campus locations may be required to support faculty-development initiatives, training, meetings, or identified instructional needs.
- Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Strong knowledge of effective teaching and learning practices across instructional modalities.Demonstrated ability to coach, mentor, and develop faculty.Ability to provide specific, constructive, and actionable instructional feedback.Ability to establish supportive faculty relationships while maintaining appropriate accountability.Ability to use multiple sources of data to identify instructional needs and guide faculty-development interventions.Strong communication, collaboration, interpersonal, and organizational skills.Sound professional judgment when addressing sensitive faculty-development concerns.Ability to maintain accurate and professional documentation.Proficiency with educational technology and willingness to learn and apply emerging tools.Ability to work effectively with campus leadership and centralized academic teams.Consistent on-campus presence to support local faculty-development needs.
- Degree of Supervision: The Faculty Development Specialist works with a high degree of independence under the direction of the Director of Teaching & Learning. The FDS is expected to exercise sound professional judgment, proactively identify faculty-development needs, maintain appropriate documentation, collaborate effectively with academic leadership, and escalate significant concerns when appropriate.
