Job Summary and Qualifications
The Wheelchair Van Driver provides safe, courteous, and reliable non-emergency transportation for patients requiring wheelchair assistance between hospitals, rehabilitation centers, skilled nursing facilities, and home settings. The driver represents Portsmouth Regional Hospital with professionalism and compassion, ensuring that each patient’s comfort, dignity, and safety are maintained throughout the transport process.
This position is a vital member of the Medical Transport Team, supporting the hospital’s mission of delivering safe, skilled, and compassionate care while promoting an excellent patient experience.
What will you do in this role:
- Provide prompt, safe, and courteous transport of wheelchair-bound or mobility-limited patients to and from healthcare or residential locations.
- Assist patients with embarking, securing, and disembarking the vehicle, always ensuring safety and dignity.
- Operate wheelchair lifts, restraints, and securing systems in compliance with hospital policies and manufacturer specifications.
- Communicate professionally with dispatch, nursing units, and receiving facilities regarding pick-up times, destinations, and special needs.
- Maintain situational awareness, including weather, traffic, and road conditions, to ensure timely service.
- Complete transport documentation accurately, including mileage, pickup/drop-off times, and any notable incidents.
- Clean and restock vehicle as needed, ensuring it always remains ready for service.
- Report vehicle maintenance needs, safety concerns, or delays to the supervisor or dispatcher promptly.
What qualifications will you need:
High school diploma or GED required. Valid driver’s license free from restrictions and insurable by hospital insurance company. 1-3 years of relevant work experience. Basic Life Support certification within 30 days of the beginning of employment.
