About Our Labor and Delivery Unit at McDowell Hospital:
The Labor and Delivery Unit at McDowell Hospital provides comprehensive, family-centered maternity services to the families of McDowell County and the surrounding Western North Carolina region. As an intimate, specialized birthing center, our unit is designed to provide safe, high-quality care for mothers and newborns throughout the entire journey of childbirth—including prenatal stabilization, labor, delivery, postpartum recovery, and newborn care. Our modern unit features private, fully equipped Labor, Delivery, Recovery, and Postpartum (LDRP) suites designed for patient comfort, safety, and clinical efficiency. Supported 24/7 by skilled OB/GYN physicians, certified pediatric providers, and specialized labor and delivery nurses, our unit handles both scheduled deliveries and unexpected obstetrical emergencies. Our clinical team works with highly coordinated, gentle precision to create an individualized birth experience that prioritizes patient preference, evidence-based safety standards, and a smooth, celebratory transition into family life.
What Sets Us Apart:
The Labor and Delivery Unit at McDowell Hospital combines the advanced clinical safety standards of the Mission Health network with the deeply personal, warm environment of a community hospital. What truly sets us apart is our family-centered LDRP model, which allows families to stay in the exact same comfortable, private room for their entire stay rather than being shuffled between different units. Because our unit maintains a peaceful, closely-knit setting, our nurses and providers have the time to deliver truly individualized, one-on-one care, education, and breastfeeding support. You will work alongside a passionate, welcoming team where open communication, shared trust, and the celebration of new life create a uniquely uplifting and supportive workplace.
