Job Description
About the role
General Motors is seeking a Manufacturing Engineer to join the Grand Rapids manufacturing engineering team. In this role, you will help develop, launch, maintain, and continuously improve manufacturing processes that support safe, reliable, high-quality production.
You will work closely with production, quality, maintenance, controls, design, supplier, and program teams to solve complex problems and deliver robust processes from concept through production. The ideal candidate is a hands-on engineer who enjoys working on the plant floor, using data to make decisions, and turning improvement opportunities into sustainable results.
What you’ll do
- Develop, document, and improve manufacturing processes, work instructions, tooling, equipment, and production methods.
- Support assembly, test, and driveline-related manufacturing activities as assigned.
- Lead root-cause analysis and corrective actions for safety, quality, delivery, cost, and productivity issues.
- Use lean manufacturing, structured problem-solving, process capability, and continuous-improvement methods to improve operational performance.
- Partner with production teams to identify process risks, eliminate waste, and improve ergonomics and operator effectiveness.
- Support equipment, tooling, controls, and process changes through design reviews, installation, validation, and production release.
- Develop and maintain process documentation, standard work, PFMEA inputs, control plans, process flow documentation, and other manufacturing engineering records.
- Participate in new product introduction, manufacturing readiness, build events, run-at-rate activities, and launch execution.
- Analyze manufacturing data and communicate findings, risks, recommendations, and project status to technical and business stakeholders.
- Coordinate with cross-functional teams and suppliers to resolve issues and achieve project milestones.
- Promote a culture of safety, quality, accountability, inclusion, and continuous improvement.
Required qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in manufacturing engineering, mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, electrical engineering, or a related engineering discipline or equivalent related experience
- Experience applying engineering principles to manufacturing, production, assembly, testing, or process improvement.
- Experience with structured problem-solving and root-cause analysis.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, process documentation, and technical data.
- Strong analytical, communication, organization, and project-management skills.
- Ability to work effectively with hourly production employees, skilled trades, engineers, suppliers, and leadership.
- Ability to work on-site in a manufacturing environment and support occasional off-shift, weekend, or extended-hour activities when business needs require.
Preferred qualifications
- Experience in automotive, powertrain, driveline, assembly, test, or high-volume manufacturing.
- Experience with lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, PFMEA, control plans, APQP, GD&T, or statistical process control.
- Experience supporting manufacturing equipment, automation, robotics, controls, or error-proofing systems.
- Experience with CAD, manufacturing execution systems, data analysis, or process simulation tools.
- Green Belt, Black Belt, or other continuous-improvement certification.
- Experience supporting product launches, capacity planning, or capital projects.
What makes you successful
- You are comfortable moving between technical analysis and hands-on work on the plant floor.
- You build trust with production and cross-functional partners.
- You identify problems early, communicate clearly, and follow issues through to closure.
- You balance immediate production needs with long-term process capability and sustainability.
- You use facts and data to prioritize work and make sound engineering decisions.
- You promote safe, inclusive, and respectful collaboration across the organization.

This position is based at the Grand Rapids COMP facility and requires regular presence in manufacturing and office environments. The role may require standing, walking, wearing required personal protective equipment, and working near operating equipment, production lines, and industrial noise.
