The Mechanical Engineer - Power Generation drives the engineering, delivery, commissioning, and operational readiness of mission-critical power-generation infrastructure for data center operations. The role requires extensive technical expertise in gas turbines, reciprocating generators, diesel and natural-gas generation, fuel systems, cooling systems, emissions equipment, and balance-of-plant mechanical systems.
Working cross-functionally from concept through delivery and operations handoff, this engineer ensures power-generation systems are safe, reliable, maintainable, scalable, and capable of meeting data center availability and resilience requirements.
Internal Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the mechanical power-generation subject-matter expert throughout the full infrastructure lifecycle: design, engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, turnover, and operations.
- Partners with design, engineering, construction, delivery, commissioning, and operations teams to define generation-system requirements, design criteria, equipment specifications, and reliability strategies.
- Review and influence designs for onsite power generation (BTM) such as gas turbines, reciprocating generators, diesel and natural-gas generators, alternators, fuel storage and distribution, cooling, lubrication, exhaust, ventilation, emissions controls, and associated auxiliary systems.
- Establish equipment redundancy, capacity, maintainability, and operational-readiness requirements aligned with data center availability objectives.
- Evaluate OEM equipment selections, technical submittals, factory acceptance tests, vendor proposals, and construction-installation quality.
- Provide technical oversight during construction, including field inspections, installation reviews, punch-list resolution, change management, and issue escalation.
- Develop and approve commissioning plans, integrated systems-testing plans, startup procedures, load-bank tests, generator-paralleling tests, black-start tests, and utility-transfer scenarios.
- Lead troubleshooting and root-cause analysis of equipment failures, operating anomalies, generator trips, control-system alarms, and performance degradation.
- Develop maintenance philosophies, preventive and predictive maintenance programs, spare-parts strategies, operating procedures, and emergency-response playbooks.
- Ensure an effective handoff to operations teams, including training, documentation, as-built drawings, maintenance records, warranties, and vendor-support plans.
- Analyze operational data—including vibration, oil analysis, temperatures, pressures, fuel quality, and performance metrics—to identify risks and improve reliability.
- Support expansion planning, capacity upgrades, lifecycle replacement decisions, and continuous-improvement initiatives.
- Coordinate with electrical and controls engineers to ensure dependable interfaces with switchgear, transformers, UPS systems, automatic transfer switches, protection systems, and utility infrastructure.
- Ensure compliance with applicable safety, environmental, emissions, fuel-storage, and regulatory requirements.
- Manage technical relationships with equipment manufacturers, contractors, commissioning providers, and service partners.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Power Engineering, Energy Systems, or a related technical discipline.
- 10+ years of extensive experience in industrial, utility-scale, or mission-critical power generation.
- Demonstrated expertise with gas turbines, reciprocating engine generators, diesel and natural-gas generation systems, and auxiliary mechanical equipment.
- Experience leading power-generation projects from design through commissioning and operational turnover.
- Strong knowledge of fuel systems, cooling systems, lubrication systems, exhaust systems, ventilation, emissions controls, and generator controls.
- Experience with generator synchronization, paralleling, load sharing, load-bank testing, and emergency-power system operation.
- Proven ability to work across engineering, construction, project delivery, and operations organizations.
- Strong technical writing, documentation, communication, and vendor-management skills.
- Ability to support 24/7 critical operations, including planned maintenance windows and emergency-response events.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with hyperscale or enterprise data centers, microgrids, or large-scale distributed generation.
- Professional Engineer license, CMRP, OEM turbine/generator certifications, or equivalent credentials.
- Familiarity with NFPA, ASME, OSHA, EPA/emissions, and applicable local codes.
- Experience with CMMS platforms, reliability-centered maintenance, condition-based monitoring, and asset lifecycle management.
