Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) builds and operates large-scale cloud services that power mission-critical workloads for enterprises worldwide. The SPLAT team delivers foundational platform services for secure API routing, service registration, traffic management, distributed throttling, private connectivity, authentication, and safe-change enforcement. SPLAT sits in the request path for more than 300 OCI control planes and processes hundreds of billions of API requests each month.
We are seeking a Lead Principal Platform Software Engineer to lead the architecture and delivery of critical platform systems and initiatives across teams. This is a hands-on technical leadership role spanning high-throughput Java services, distributed systems, networking, security, and production reliability. You will write and review production code, guide architectural decisions, solve complex operational problems, and mentor engineers. Success requires sound technical judgment, clear communication, and the ability to drive progress when requirements, ownership, or failure boundaries are unclear.
Internal Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
Architecture & Delivery:
Scalability and Operational Excellence
- Establish capacity models, performance objectives, scaling strategies, and load-testing plans for high-throughput services.
- Design effective throttling, load shedding, backpressure, caching, concurrency, and failure-recovery mechanisms.
- Define service-level indicators and objectives, actionable metrics and alarms, dashboards, runbooks, and deployment safeguards.
- Lead complex incident investigations and turn recurring failures and manual processes into automation and preventive engineering improvements.
- Serve as a technical escalation point for issues spanning applications, infrastructure, networking, and organizational boundaries.
Technical Leadership
- Provide architectural direction in critical areas such as routing, authentication, private connectivity, runtime performance, observability, and deployment infrastructure.
- Break broad initiatives into meaningful work that engineers can own independently while maintaining architectural consistency.
- Mentor engineers through design, code review, delivery, and incident response.
- Raise engineering quality through reusable systems, tools, standards, and operational practices.
- Contribute to hiring and shape the team roadmap by identifying architectural investments, platform gaps, and reliability risks.
Cross-Team Execution
- Align SPLAT and partner teams on technical decisions, ownership, dependencies, and rollout plans.
- Communicate complex designs, tradeoffs, risks, and progress clearly to engineers and leaders.
- Drive progress under ambiguity by distinguishing facts from assumptions, identifying reversible decisions, and clarifying external dependencies.
- Adapt technical direction as production evidence and new information challenge earlier assumptions.
- Use modern development and AI-assisted tools responsibly to improve engineering quality and productivity.
