The Opportunity
As a dedicated Strategy and Planning Staff Counsel and Legal Operations (Executive), you will lead the strategy development and operational implementation in support of the Staff Counsel function and will be responsible for building strong partnership with Senior Leadership in SCO and P&C Claims and creating a shared alignment around a vision, managing risk, the organization’s strategy, and ensuring the associated work connects to corporate goals. The Staff Counsel function (SCO) in the Chief Legal Office is made up of regional law firms focused on providing property and casualty insurance defense services to USAA members.
We offer a flexible work environment that requires an individual to be in the office 4 days per week. This position can be based in one of the following locations: San Antonio, TX, or Charlotte, NC. Relocation assistance is available for this position.
What you'll do:
- Engages with USAA Senior Executive Management to influence and develop long term strategies and plans and define strategic objectives.
- Effectively communicates and implements business strategy so that all stakeholders understand the business’ strategic plan and how it aligns with the company's overall goals.
- Leads a team that is responsible for executing the strategic plan that will result in both the short and long-term growth of the business
- Establishes and reviews key strategic priorities and translates them into a comprehensive, actionable, strategic plan. Monitors execution of the strategic plan for opportunities and develops inclusive planning processes.
- Partners with the functional area leader to ensure departmental alignment and facilitate problem-solving and provide consultation and decision-making support on a variety of concerns.
- Oversees programs and projects, board deliverables, and prioritizes critical work tasks for the functional area considering best use of resources and initiatives.
- Liaises with human resources and finance in the planning and management of financial and staffing resources needed to support the organization.
- Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.
What you have:
- Bachelor’s degree; OR 4 years of related experience (in addition to the minimum years of experience required) may be substituted in lieu of degree.
- 10 years of progressive related experience developing strategies, managing major initiatives and delivering results within a complex matrix environment required.
- 4 years of people leadership experience in building, managing and/or developing high performing teams required.
- Experience collaborating with key resources and stakeholders with demonstrated ability to influence broad organizational decisions and to manage work to achieve strategic goals.
- Executive-level business acumen in the areas of strategy, business operations, industry best practices and emerging trends.
- Experience developing, tracking, and communicating appropriate level of metrics and reporting to support organizational initiatives.
What sets you apart:
- Masters degree (JD, M.B.A or Executive M.B.A)
- 5 years of experience building and executing operational risk and control programs in a highly regulated industry
- Demonstrated experience with data & analytics and technology project management
- Demonstrated experience with setting financial goals, achieving cost efficiency and budgeting for a large organization
- Extensive working knowledge of the Chief Legal Office operations and Staff Counsel business processes
- Experience building data driven business cases and location strategies for expansions in different jurisdictions
- Proven ability to create, implement and maintain training programs for trial attorneys and paralegal
- Knowledge, understating and application of Third Party risk management principals.
- Impeccable time management skills, manages multiple priorities of varying complexity, with excellent execution.
- Ability to influence and inspire senior level stakeholders to deliver upon time sensitive objectives in a highly matrixed, fast paced environment.
- Emotionally intelligent and self-aware leader that builds authentic relationships and trust with ease.
- Proactive, solution oriented critical thinker and problem solver. Anticipates needs, has bias for removing obstacles.
- Must be able to travel within the United States

What we offer:
Compensation: USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market data of the position. The actual salary for this role may vary by location. The salary range for this position is: $158,960 - $303,830.
Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance and at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.
