Plant Operator – Detroit MI
Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. (NYSE:APD), a Fortune 500 manufacturer of industrial gases, is seeking an Operations Technician Plant Operator at its Detroit, MI facility.
The Operations Technician works as part of a team and is responsible for the operation of a highly automated Hydrogen Plant using process knowledge/skills to achieve Safe and Efficient operating results. The Operations Technician is responsible for Operating, Controlling, and Monitoring the process of the Detroit SMR to produce Hydrogen (H2), Steam, and Demineralized Water (H20) to our customer in accordance with contractual guidelines with the use of our highly automated DCS controlled plant systems.
The Operations Technicians will also work alongside and assist Maintenance and Instrumentation/Electrical Technicians to maintain various pieces of plant equipment. Additional duties will include taking field readings, manipulating manual valves, working with and handling of hazardous chemicals, operating a forklift, performing equipment inspections, and various other projects as assigned by site management.

Required Skills / Abilities:
- Must work towards receiving a City of Detroit Stationary Engineer 1st Class Boiler license within the applicable time period. (Refer to Operator Progression Guide for details)
- Must maintain a strong mechanical aptitude.
- Ability to read and interoperate plant P&ID’s and drawings
- Maintain / participate in ensuring all safety, environmental, and quality programs are maintained at inspection ready standards.
- Display professional communication skills to co-workers, management, and customers at all times.
- Computer skills required for Digital Control Systems (DCS) operation, as well as basic computer skills in data-processing, and electronic communication (MS Office)
- Demonstrate interpersonal skills, team-based attitude.
Key Job Responsibilities:
- Controlling and monitoring the continuous manufacturing processes to produce Hydrogen (H2), Steam, and Demineralized Water (H2O)
- Work with compressors, pumps and other pieces of rotating equipment
- Perform some minor electrical and instrumentation work
- Minor construction as required (i.e. plant modifications)
- Taking field process readings
- Taking and recording Boiler Chemistry water samples
- Performing equipment inspections
- Forklift operations; Minor maintenance on equipment; Snow Removal
- Contribute at plant turnarounds
- Prepare and submit documentation, including Standard Operating Procedures, internal/external audits, management of change documents
- Monitor activities of external contractors
- Conduct safety training for the contractors
- Follow Lockout / Tag Out Procedures
- Follow SWIM / JSA procedures
- Issue Safe Work Permits for all jobs being completed in the plant
- May include travel in North America to support other plants for shift coverage in remote areas, as well as plant turnarounds
- Take part in operational upgrade events locally, and at other Air Products facilities
- Actively taking part in safety committees and meetings
- Plant problem solving resource as needed
- Professional skills improvement & development in process, instrumentation, safety management in workplace (Progression Guide)
- This role is safety sensitive position.
Minimum Hiring Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Basic computer proficiency and software knowledge, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Previous work history and/or military experience
- Electrical, instrument or mechanical maintenance experience a plus
- Ability to read/understand piping and instrumentation drawings a plus
- Experience with personal computers and/or DCS systems
- Desire and ability to work in a team environment
- This is a safety sensitive position.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to climb ladders and steps and lift at least 50 lbs.
- Be able to meet call-in requirements as needed
- Elevated work required.
Work Hours
- Ability to work 12-hour rotating shifts, including nights and weekends, and participate in an on-call rotation when needed
- Ability to support 24/7 shiftwork in a small team environment
- Requirement to be scheduled for on-call shifts
