Instrument and Electrical Tech
Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. (NYSE: APD), a Fortune 500 manufacturer of industrial gases, is seeking an experienced Instrument and Electrical Technician at our Texas City, TX facility.
The facility assets include Air Products largest Steam Methane Reformer, a Nitrogen Air Separation Unit, the world’s largest single train Ammonia Plant, Ammonia Pipelines, 60 MW of Steam Turbine Power Generation and large Utility System. This facility is a greenfield build expanding Air Products presence in the Gulf Coast at Texas City and will connect with Air Products Gulf Coast Hydrogen Pipeline system.
The Instrument & Electrical Technician is responsible for performing preventive and corrective maintenance on instrumentation and electrical equipment at the Texas City facility while assisting and developing other technicians in the group.

Key Job Responsibilities:
- Participate actively in department/plant safety programs. Promote safety rules and regulations as well as environmental compliance
- Engage actively in a team environment, bring a positive attitude, maintain personal accountability, and provide mentoring and coaching for team member development
- Provide hands on support as required to resolve Instrument/Electrical field problems as they occur.
- Provide guidance to the planning department for developing the weekly schedule.
- Responsible for assigning workload to the Technicians for the day’s activities and provide daily updates.
- This position is responsible to perform and/or supervise the inspection, repair, installation, troubleshooting and modification of process controls, control valves, safety devices, analyzers, PLC’s, field instrumentation (pressure, temperature, level and flow instrumentation), process monitoring equipment, low, medium and high voltage motors/breakers and control circuits and distributed control systems (DCS)
- Technicians are also responsible for commissioning of new plants in addition to troubleshooting, repair, and calibration of plant instrumentation and electrical controls.
- Technicians must be familiar with all equipment in the plant. A sampling of these devices include: transmitters, switches, analyzers, PH and Conductivity probes, programmable controllers, proximity devices, level control systems, control valves, equipment and personnel safety systems, pay meter systems, electrical distribution systems, transformers, single phase motors, three phase motors and motor drives and controls. Within each category are a variety of pneumatic and electronic devices.
- Investigate equipment failures, determine root cause of failure, and recommend appropriate solutions to reduce reoccurrence of/or eliminate cause of failure
- Recommend and specify revisions to improve equipment performance and/or system reliability/capacity
- Assist in the development, implementation, and periodic review of preventative/predictive maintenance programs to reduce unplanned shutdowns and improve overall plant on stream capability
- Update and/or create maintenance manual/procedures for certain equipment as needed
- Keep abreast of and evaluate new methodologies, work practices, equipment, instrumentation, controls, technology, etc., for application and use within the plant
- Participate in the planning and execution of minor and major planned/unplanned shutdowns. Provide technical and hands on support as required during shutdowns
- Assist in the development and ongoing improvement of the plant mechanical integrity program
- Must be able to develop work scopes for equipment repair and overhaul, to prepare and provide technical reports as well as enter information into SAP to provide accurate documentation on equipment and information to enable others in the organization to carry out their responsibilities effectively
- This role is a safety sensitive position.
Qualifications
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings (electrical drawings, schematics, P&ID’s, equipment drawings)
- Experience with SAP or equivalent CMMS system a plus
- Demonstrate the practice of safe handling of hand tools and hand power tools typically and commonly used in maintenance tasks
- Knowledge of PLC and DCS controls is a plus
- Understand the properties, behaviors, and hazards of the equipment
- Three (3) years minimum maintenance experience in a petrochemical, manufacturing, or military environment
- High voltage equipment (up to 13.8KV) maintenance and troubleshooting experience required
- Two-year Associate degree in Instrumentation/Electrical discipline or relevant military experience
- Working knowledge basic word processing, email and spreadsheet programs.
- Practical knowledge of machinery overhauls and refurbishment.
- Good organizational skills, the ability to work alone if necessary, and the ability to lead a crew.
- Demonstrated safe work skills, fundamental computer skills and the ability to work extended hours
- Able to work in a team environment with Operators, Mechanics, Engineering/Technical Support and other contracted crafts
- On call rotation and must be willing to work overtime
- Drive company vehicles safely
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to work in an industrial environment which includes climbing ladders and steps in elevated work, get on scaffolding, get on manlift type equipment and wear PPE such as full body harness
- Must be able to wear self-contained and air purifying respiratory protection
- Able to work in confined spaces
- Able to lift 50 lbs.
- Must be clean shaven
- Must be willing to work at a tobacco-free facility
Work Hours:
- Working hours – 4/10 schedule, Monday – Thursday (7am – 5:30pm)
- This position will be working indoors and outdoors.
- This is a plant based position.
