Leidos is seeking a Research Engineer to join our team in Pittsburgh, PA to work with a distributed, multidisciplinary team working on the cutting-edge of hydrogen energy infrastructure and transportation. The candidate should possess knowledge of and practical experience with thermodynamics and diffusion in a structural materials application. The position will be primarily an onsite research position and focus on characterization support for various National Energy Technology Lab’s (NETL) teams. This work will involve a multi-disciplinary, scientific, and technically-oriented national laboratory team, participation alongside other materials scientists, engineers, and computer scientists that produces technological solutions for America’s energy challenges. From developing creative innovations and efficient energy systems, to advancing technologies that produce, transport, and utilize hydrogen and other fuels, NETL research is providing breakthroughs and discoveries that support home-grown energy initiatives, stimulate a growing economy, and improve the health, safety, and security of all Americans.
Location: This position is onsite at the NETL lab in Pittsburgh, PA. Only candidates near (or willing to relocate to) the Pittsburgh, PA area will be considered.

Primary Responsibilities:
- Perform high-pressure permeation testing and analysis of alloy materials to support the design of the hydrogen-resistant pipeline steel.
- Assist with characterizing the wettability and permeability of various reservoir rocks.
- Assist with performing hydrogen core flood experiments to determine the hydrogen permeability and retention of various reservoir rocks.
- Assemble, operate, and troubleshoot gas delivery equipment that may be equipped with mass flow controllers and/or gas chromatographs (GC).
- Disseminate research results through presentations in relevant scientific forums, and/or publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
- Support sample analysis using analytical instruments.
- Support laboratory management activities, e.g., purchasing, coordination for equipment operations and vendor visits, coordination between lab staff and EH&S
Required Qualifications:
- Masters degree (or PhD) in Chemical Engineering, Material Science, or a related field with 1+ year of experience.
- Demonstrated proficiency in data collection, curation, and quality assessment.
- Lab experience working with gas delivery systems and analytical instruments.
- Ability to work independently with strong organizational skills for submitted sample analysis.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Ability to work effectively as a part of a team in a multi-disciplinary environment and interact with people with a variety of expertise.
- Must be able to meet the requirements for gaining access to work on the NETL campus.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Expertise working with analytical instruments such as gas chromatographs, NMR, contact angle, permeameter, and ICP-OES/MS.
- Experience working with, assembling, and leak testing high pressure gas systems such as Swagelok assemblies.
- Research experience in structural materials and calculating or modeling diffusion and other thermodynamic properties.
Salary Range for this position: $90K to $100K

Pay Range:
Pay Range $81,250.00 - $146,875.00
