Leidos Defense Systems is seeking a team-oriented and customer focused Chief Engineer for an Open-Air Advanced Radar Program (OAARP) that will advance and enhance DoD’s target detection capability in challenging environments.The Chief Engineer will work directly with the Program Manager along with organizational leadership to ensure all aspects of the OAARP engineering efforts are adequately planned, executed, and communicated to the customer. This role includes overall responsibility for technical execution and functional technical team oversight of an advanced radar team of 60 + multi-disciplinary scientists, engineers, technicians, and support personnel that will design, develop, integrate, test, and maintain an advanced radar for a DoD customer.
Primary Responsibilities
The Chief Engineer will have the following primary responsibilities:
- Provide Leadership for 6 functional technical teams, including Electrical, Mechanical, and Software efforts
- Manage the overall technical work effort and products of the engineering staff
- Promote cohesive team execution with a positive winning culture
- Technical interfacing with the Government technical and leadership team
- Close coordination with the program manager
- Implements and manages disciplined engineering processes (ERBs, Drawing Release, Analysis Report Release etc.)
- Establish and maintain the formal technical baseline for the program
- Executes the project in accordance with the Systems Engineering Plan
- Support to business development and proposal development will also be required at times
- Some travel and site visits will also be required.
Basic Qualifications
Bachelors degree- in an engineering field including electrical, mechanical, or aerospace engineering and a minimum of 20 years of relevant experience in defense industry.
Masters Degree- in an engineering field including electrical, mechanical, or aerospace engineering and a minimum of 15 years of relevant experience in defense industry.
PHD- in an engineering field including electrical, mechanical, or aerospace engineering and a minimum of 13 years of relevant experience in defense industry.
Must have strong analytical and problem-solving skills including demonstrated ability to manage complex technical tasks while gaining the confidence of customers, technical staff, managers, and peers.
Relevant technical experience in radar requirements development and verification testing.
Experience articulating complex technical concepts to customers, business development, program delivery, technical teams, and executives, both orally and in writing.
Must be a U.S. Citizen and possess an active Final Secret Clearance is required with the ability to meet applicable program security eligibility requirements for the position.
Must be able to maintain a Final Top-Secret Clearance along with meeting and maintaining program security eligibility.
Must be a resident of the North Alabama area or willing to relocate to the Huntsville – North Alabama, AL area. This position is in person only.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working with MATLAB, understanding of signal processing fundamentals, such as sampling and Fourier analysis, and knowledge of collaboration and development tools such as GIT, JIRA, and CI/CD pipelines are greatly valued.
Experience leading a highly technical program through the product lifecycle.
Radar Subject Matter Expertise (SME) and a Master’s Degree in Engineering, preferably in Electrical Engineering.

Pay Range:
Pay Range $148,850.00 - $269,075.00
