Job Description
Core GIS Concepts:
- Spatial Data Types: Vector (points, lines, polygons) and Raster data.
- Coordinate Systems & Projections: Understanding of geographic and projected coordinate systems, datum transformations.
- Cartography Principles: Map design, symbology, labeling, and effective communication of spatial data.
- Geospatial Data Acquisition: Data collection methods (e.g., GPS, satellite imagery, surveys).
- Data Quality & Accuracy: Understanding of precision, accuracy, error, and uncertainty in spatial data.
- Metadata: Ability to create, edit, and validate metadata and an understanding how to maintain metadata consistency across datasets.
- 2. GIS Software Proficiency
- Esri Suite: ArcGIS Pro, ArcMap, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Enterprise.
- Web GIS Platforms: ArcGIS Hub, Experience Builder, Dashboards, StoryMaps.
- 3. Spatial Analysis & Modeling
- Basic Spatial Analysis: Buffering, overlay analysis, proximity analysis.
- Advanced Spatial Analysis: Spatial statistics, network analysis, 3D analysis.
- Modeling: Suitability models, hydrological modeling, and predictive modeling.
- 4. Data Management & Integration
- Database Management: Understanding and working with relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL/PostGIS, Oracle Spatial).
- Data Formats: Shapefiles, GeoJSON, KML, raster formats (e.g., TIFF, JPEG), and vector formats.
- ETL Processes: Extract, Transform, Load workflows for integrating data from multiple sources.
- 5. Programming & Automation
- Scripting: Python (ArcPy, ArcGIS API for Python), JavaScript (Esri JavaScript API), and R for geospatial analysis.
- Automation: Building and running geoprocessing models and scripts to automate repetitive tasks.
- Web Development: Basics of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for creating interactive web maps.
Core Responsibilities
- Collaborates with project stakeholders to identify product and technical requirements. Conducts analysis to determine integration needs.
- Designs new software and web applications, supports applications under development and customizes current applications. Assists with the software update process for existing applications and roll-outs of software releases.
- Participates in training representatives and operations staff on internally developed software applications.
- Researches, writes and edits documentation and technical requirements, including software designs, evaluation plans, test results, technical manuals and formal recommendations and reports.
- Monitors and evaluates competitive applications and products. Reviews literature, patents and current practices relevant to the solution of assigned projects.
- Provides technical leadership throughout the design process and guidance with regards to practices, procedures and techniques. Serves as a guide and mentor for junior-level Software Development Engineers.
- Works with Quality Assurance team to determine if applications fit specification and technical requirements.
- Displays in-depth knowledge of engineering methodologies, concepts, skills and their application in the area of specified engineering specialty.
- Displays in-depth knowledge of and ability to apply, process design and redesign skills. Presents and defends architectural, design and technical choices to internal audiences.
- Displays knowledge of and ability to apply, project management skills.
- Consistent exercise of independent judgment and discretion in matters of significance.
- Regular, consistent and punctual attendance. Must be able to work nights and weekends, variable schedule(s) and overtime as necessary.
