Job Summary:
The principal objective of this position is the design, fabrication, and testing of semiconductor laser sources and detectors in the infrared spectrum focused on sensors applications such as light detection and ranging (LiDAR) and infrared countermeasures (IRCM). Of particular interest are photonic-crystal surface-emitting lasers (PCSELs), avalanche photodiodes (APDs), and integration of semiconductor devices with photonic integrated circuits (PICs).
Key Responsibilities:
- Device Design and modeling: Design of epitaxial structures such as laser cavities (macro and micro), and model device performance.
- Microfabrication: Produce laser and detectors through microfabrication and characterize multifaceted device performance.
- Device Testing: Test and evaluation of both locally developed and foundry devices.
Work Environment:
- Location: On-Site, Wright-Patterson AFB
- Travel Requirements: Minimal, primarily conferences to share results.
- Working Hours: Standard 40/week, Flexible schedule
Required Qualifications:
- Masters in physics, optical sciences, electrical engineering, or related disciplines with relevant experience with a minimum of 4 years experience.
- Prior experience with microfabrication.
- Prior experience with finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) / finite element method (FEM) or similar optoelectronic modeling software general testing and characterization within optical setups, and data collection & analysis
- Written and verbal communication skills for publishing and presenting results
- A security clearance, or the ability to obtain a security clearance, may be required
Desired Qualifications:
- Laser and detector characterization, experience with photonic integrated circuits and/or component design experience
- PhD
- Experience with PCSELs, VECSELs, quantum-cascade lasers (QCLs), and related skills.
