Our Product Management team is focused on delivering and maintaining best in class insurance products for our business partners that are compliant with state regulations, support strategic goals of the planning units, and are approved by state departments of insurance with the fewest objections as possible. As Director of Regulatory Solutions- Commercial Lines, you will be seen as the subject matter expert for the interpretation of jurisdictional regulatory changes across our commercial lines and excess and surplus and specialty business areas, this includes both admitted and non-admitted business. Other team members will come to you for support on complex regulatory/statutory changes. A minimum of 5 years’ experience in product management or related regulatory or compliance role is required. This role is highly visible and requires excellent communication skills and the ability to understand regulatory language and the impacts of regulatory changes on a diverse commercial lines portfolio.
Specific examples of responsibilities include:
- Review and interpretation of regulatory changes to determine impacts to Commercial and E&S/Specialty products.
- Monitoring legislative tools to identify and socialize potential regulatory actions that may impact our business areas.
- Proactive communication regarding regulatory and proposed legislative changes to stakeholders
- Leading the team coordinating responses to DOI underwriting complaints
- Ensuring accurate monitoring and reporting of regulatory changes to ensure products remain compliant with state regulations.
- Other responsibilities as assigned.
This role is critical to the success in achieving excellence in the management of products! Maintaining deep knowledge of the lines of business written including competitor activities, ISO products and changes, and an understanding of the regulatory differences between admitted and non-admitted business is required. Knowledge and experience in product related tools including but not limited to: State Filings, AM BestCore.Verisk.com, Mozart, Reference Connect, and ODEN is preferred.
The preferred working arrangement for the Director, Regulatory Solutions - Commercial Lines/E&S Specialty role is a hybrid model, with a few days per week in the Columbus, OH or Des Moines offices. However, remote work arrangements will be considered for candidates located outside the Columbus or Des Moines areas.

Key Responsibilities:
Coordinates the development and implementation of best processes for product regulatory compliance.
Collaborates on metrics and scorecards for execution of system changes to achieve and maintain compliance.
Provides consultation on compliance and contract and/or document issues relating to CL and/or E&SS products in each state and any Federal issues identified across Commercial, and/or Excess and Surplus, and Specialty operations.
Provides multi-level and multi-issue consulting and advisory services to a diverse mix of internal and external customers on complicated, sensitive, or multi-state issues.
Directs activities related to the monitoring and analysis of changes in statutory and regulatory requirements for assigned product(s).
Oversees activities related to the development of product documentation, forms creation, filing, and/or maintenance, and the coordination and implementation of new and/or revised legal contracts and related materials.
Supervises responses to state insurance departments or other regulatory agency inquiries regarding regulatory and contract matters.
Monitors compliance and regulatory industry trends and identifies the impact to CL and/or E&SS Products and processes. Communicates regulatory changes and their impacts to business partners and leads solutions for compliance. Ensures the regulatory solutions team partners with business unit and Information Technology (IT) on any actions needed to maintain compliance.
Leads the development and implementation of corrective action plans for compliance issues. Monitors and reports progress. Validates the overall efficiency of delivered corrective action plans.
Develops and maintains effective working relationships with Commercial, and/or Excess and Surplus, and Specialty Product and Underwriting, Corporate Compliance, General Counsel, Shared Services, and insurance and/or regulatory agency authorities.
Ensures timely and effective communication of resolution decisions to customers according to procedures and regulatory guidelines. Advocates the interest of both the customer and Nationwide to ensure an equitable solution on behalf of the customer where possible. Reconciles complaint and/or regulatory records with state departments of insurance as needed.
Coordinates response to state departments of insurance on regulatory issues and requests for data.
Resolves issues with business units and initiates leadership feedback on resolution options. Monitors and advises management of complaint and/or regulatory trends.
Maintains knowledge of all federal and state laws, regulations, and/or industry trends.
Manages associates, including performance management, salary planning and administration, training, and development, workflow, and organizational planning, hiring and placement, and disciplinary actions. Builds clear expectations and objectives and provides developmental opportunities.
Drives the development and use of data analytics to improve the regulatory solutions program.
Employs standard methodologies for continuous improvement and innovation opportunities.
May perform other responsibilities as assigned.
Reporting Relationships: Reports to Product and Underwriting leader. Leads a team of seven or more associates.
Typical Skills and Experiences:
Education: Undergraduate studies in business administration, insurance, business ethics, criminal justice, English, finance, or pre-law preferred. Graduate studies preferred.
License/Certification/Designation: CPCU, AINS preferred.
Experience: Typically, ten or more years of related work experience in technical insurance role with emphasis on risk management, risk mitigation and analysis, compliance, or a related subject area. Strong project management, leadership and data analytic skills preferred.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Requires solid understanding of insurance company operations including technology, financial and metric analysis, reporting and quality initiatives. In-depth knowledge of P&C, business and/or staff unit products, services, organizational structure, and critical initiatives. Demonstrated decision-making & strategic abilities; ability to recognize, analyze & improve operational performance. Ability to conceptualize strategic objectives, work towards results, deal with ambiguity, and succeed in managing and/or participating in matrix relationships.
Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.
