About this role: Wells Fargo is seeking a Principal Engineer role who provides engineering leadership to accomplish enhanced Developer Experience and Efficiencies, while effectively managing security and risk. This role will conduct feasibility studies, lead proof-of-concept efforts, define and drive technical direction, and act as a strategic thought partner to stakeholders, customers, product owners, and engineering teams. This role will be instrumental in shaping the future of our technology platforms, fostering innovation, and ensuring alignment with business goals and enterprise architecture standards.
In this role, you will: - Lead end-to-end analysis of requirements for frameworks and capabilities that drive developer experience and efficiencies, ensuring alignment with Chief Development Office (CDO) objectives and leveraging industry best practices. Evaluate technology stacks, vendor tools, and system constraints to determine execution strategy and influence product direction.
- Drive the design and prototyping of high-impact initiatives that enable foundational capabilities for Wells Fargo Technology (WFT), including feasibility spikes, hands-on POCs, risk assessments, and robust technical designs. Ensure solutions are scalable, resilient, and aligned with organizational objectives and innovations (DISP, GenAI, Cloud, Risk/Control).
- Act as a strategic thought partner to stakeholders, customers, product owners, and engineering teams, driving clarity, alignment, and execution across complex initiatives and multiple domains.
- Decompose complex features into iterative, achievable milestones in partnership with Product Owners, define clear outcomes, and ensure alignment with business objectives. Identify and mitigate technical risks early, develop robust architectures, and guide implementation.
- Deliver high-value solutions to production, ensuring scalability, reliability, and performance. Enable accelerated development velocity and continuous delivery, supporting long-term innovation.
- Foster strong partnerships with leaders, stakeholders, and partners through active participation in forums, supporting feature adoption, gathering feedback, and driving alignment between platform capabilities and organizational needs.
- Monitor incoming work requests, proactively identify challenges, and deliver scalable, strategic solutions that enhance developer experience and accelerate delivery. Ensure transparency, build trust, and promote shared understanding of platform vision and priorities.
- Serve as a strategic owner of the Developer Tools Enablement roadmap, mentor, and coach engineering workstreams, and provide guidance on best practices. Define and evolve onboarding architecture for cloud deployment ecosystems (OCP and others).
- Collaborate frequently with Agile workstreams, engineering teams, CDO, other Principal Engineers, accountable leaders, and Product Owners to provide technical leadership, design direction, and ensure consistency in design patterns and technical vision.
Required Qualifications: - 7+ years of engineering experience, or equivalent demonstrated through work experience, training, military experience, or education.
- 7+ years of deep expertise in modern tech stacks (Java, React, Spring Boot, Node.js, Microservices, GitHub Actions, Kafka, Observability tools, Mongo).
- 7+ years of strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze complex systems and develop data-driven solutions.
- 7+ years of skill in Domain-Driven Design (DDD) to build modular, maintainable, and business-aligned software architectures.
- 5+ years of experience implementing robust test automation frameworks to ensure high-quality, reliable software delivery.
- 5+ years of expertise in cloud-native/container-first application architecture, development, deployment, and CI/CD practices.
Desired Qualifications: - Experience driving design and implementation of scalable, enterprise-grade solutions across diverse platforms.
- Familiarity with risk posture enhancement, secure coding practices, and platform modernization.
- Experience with feasibility spikes, early risk assessments, and technical design for complex initiatives.
- Prior experience mentoring senior engineers and influencing organizational technical strategy.
- Ability to collaborate and influence across multiple teams, including Agile workstreams, CDO, and product owners.
- Experience supporting developer enablement and transformational objectives in a large enterprise environment.
