Onsite: This role is categorized as onsite. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Concord, NC on a full-time basis.
The Role
We are seeking an Aero Performance Engineer to join a multi-disciplined team of engineers and technicians for testing, developing, and optimizing the aerodynamic performance of a Formula One Car for competition in the F1 race series. This role places you at the intersection of advanced aerodynamic research and real-world race car performance. As part of the GM Motorsports Organization, you will engage in high-fidelity data acquisition and analysis across wind tunnel, CFD, and track environments to validate and refine aerodynamic models. Your work will directly influence design decisions and performance upgrades by improving correlation methodologies and enhancing predictive accuracy. Collaborating with partner teams and internal groups, you will help translate complex aerodynamic phenomena into actionable insights that drive competitive advantage on track and inform future vehicle development.
Joining the GM Motorsports Organization will provide you with the experience and exposure it takes to work in a competitive environment and the opportunity to showcase your aerodynamic research and development skills, contribute to innovation, connect lessons learned in racing to production intent vehicles, work cross functionally with our partners and ultimately, help shape the future of Motorsports.
What You’ll Do:
-
Quantify drag, lift and other aerodynamic deliverables to optimize on track performance
-
Communicate test results and support the aerodynamic needs of the GM Key Partner race teams, Aero Development, Aero Test and CFD groups
-
Perform correlational studies of track, wind tunnel, and CFD simulation data
-
Participate in planning and execution of wind tunnel tests; organize test results into concise, presentable reports for proper decision making and implementation
-
Attend and support track testing when appropriate analyzing gathered data and supporting investigations
-
Provide the best information to build an understanding of the aerodynamic performance of the race car that enables higher confidence levels in delivering performance upgrades to the track
-
Develop tools and strategies to help aerodynamic understanding
-
Contribute to improved methods and tools for correlation between track data and Wind Tunnel/CFD data
-
Develop tools and strategies to improve the aerodynamic understanding of the car’s performance
-
Develop good relationships with other engineer groups (vehicle performance, race engineering)
-
Mentor junior members of the team
-
Provide a flexible attendance and attitude to work, in line with the requirements for the role and specific project requirement
What You’ll Need (Required Qualifications)
-
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Physics, or a related subject with coursework in Thermodynamics, Heat Transfer and Fluid Mechanics
-
8+ years post-graduate aerodynamic experience, Motorsports experience required
-
An excellent understanding of aerodynamics is required, with a keen attention to detail and must possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills
-
