KBR is seeking a Senior MS SQL Database Administrator to join our Global Database team in Houston, TX and ensure the performance, reliability, and security of enterprise database environments supporting critical business operations. In this role, you will manage, maintain, and optimize SQL Server databases, oversee database backup and recovery processes, and support the development and implementation of database standards across the organization. You will collaborate with application, infrastructure, and security teams to troubleshoot issues, improve system performance, and ensure compliance with IT governance and data management policies. This position requires participation in an on-call rotation and occasional work outside normal business hours to support global operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Administer, maintain, and optimize Microsoft SQL Server environments across on-premises and cloud infrastructure to ensure system stability, availability, and performance
- Perform installation, configuration, patching, and upgrades of SQL Server instances, ensuring alignment with enterprise infrastructure standards
- Implement and manage database backup, recovery, and disaster recovery solutions to support business continuity
- Monitor database performance and system health, proactively identifying and resolving issues related to capacity, performance, and reliability
- Manage database security, including user access controls, encryption, and audit compliance in accordance with corporate IT policies
- Support the design, deployment, and maintenance of SQL Server clustering, replication, and Always On Availability Groups
- Collaborate with infrastructure, storage, and network teams to ensure optimal database performance and system integration
- Develop and maintain operational documentation, including standard operating procedures, architecture diagrams, and configuration baselines
- Participate in an on-call rotation to provide after-hours support and respond to critical incidents affecting database operations
- Ensure adherence to IT governance, change management, and compliance standards for all database systems
- Contribute to automation, monitoring, and performance-tuning initiatives to improve database reliability and administrative efficiency
Basic Qualifications:
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Management Information Systems, Systems Engineering, Business Administration, or a related field. Equivalent work experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
- Minimum of 7 years of hands-on experience in database administration, including the installation, configuration, and management of enterprise-scale Microsoft SQL Server environments.
Technical Expertise:
- Extensive experience in Microsoft SQL Server installation, configuration, and upgrades, including version migrations, backup and recovery (Native SQL, Rubrik, etc.), replication, and data migration activities
- Strong proficiency in Transact-SQL (T-SQL), database security and access controls, and high availability setup, support, and maintenance
- Hands-on experience with Azure SQL, including database creation, configuration, and management, as well as data migration between on-premises and cloud environments
- Proficient in Azure SQL security features, including private endpoint configuration, access management, and troubleshooting performance-related issues
- Skilled in database monitoring, alert management, performance tuning, capacity planning, and proactive system optimization
- Solid understanding of SQL Server patching processes, version management, and licensing models
- Proficiency in scripting and automation using PowerShell, batch scripts, or equivalent tools
- Ability to participate in on-call rotations, including weekends and after-hours support for critical systems
- Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work independently while keeping management and stakeholders informed
- Adaptable and eager to learn new technologies, tools, and database management techniques
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience administering additional database platforms such as Oracle, Sybase, MySQL, or PostgreSQL
- Familiarity with Linux operating systems and command-line administration
- Experience with SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) for report development and management
