Who We’re Looking For
Toyota’s Integrated Vehicle Systems (IVS) Department is looking for a passionate and highly motivated ADAS (Advanced Driving Assistance Systems) System Performance Principal Engineer.
The primary responsibility of this role is to develop and execute evaluation and tuning processes for new ADAS and ADS (Automated Driving Systems) features to achieve industry-leading performance. You’ll play a key role in shaping the future of mobility by ensuring Toyota’s advanced driving technologies meet the unique needs of North American customers.
Reporting to the Senior Engineering Manager, the person in this role will support the IVS Department’s objective to research, develop, evaluate, and implement innovative ADAS technologies that enhance safety, comfort, and driving confidence.
What You’ll Be Doing
As a Principal Engineer in ADAS System Performance, you’ll lead the charge in developing and refining cutting-edge driving assistance technologies. Your work will directly influence how Toyota vehicles perform in real-world North American driving environments.
Develop and evaluate new ADS and ADAS features tailored to North American customers and road conditions
Manage project schedules, daily planning, execution, and reporting of ADAS evaluations, ensuring timely delivery and budget alignment
Serve as a technical advisor on ADAS technologies and performance across internal and external teams
Mentor and coach team members to create data-driven proposals for system improvements and support implementation discussions
Lead process improvement initiatives to increase departmental efficiency
Create and adapt standard test methods and procedures based on facility constraints and regional requirements
Estimate system performance of new ADAS features using sensor architecture knowledge and support “corner case” development through targeted data collection
What You Bring
We’re looking for a strategic thinker and technical leader who thrives in a collaborative, fast-paced environment. To succeed in this role, you’ll need:
A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Robotics Engineering, Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field
5+ years of experience evaluating ADAS applications at the sensor and system level
Proven ability to develop and execute evaluation methods on proving grounds or public roads, including KPI creation and automated data analysis
Proficiency in Python or similar languages for system and vehicle data analysis
Experience leading tuning and benchmarking of automated features controlling acceleration, braking, or steering
Hands-on experience with OBD and CAN tools, diagnostics, troubleshooting, and sensor/data acquisition system setup
Strong time management and prioritization skills
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a passion for mentoring junior engineers
Willingness to travel domestically and internationally up to 25%

Japanese language proficiency
Master’s degree (or higher) in engineering or a related field
Experience working with robotics or other automated systems
Experience leading cross-functional teams to define North American ADAS performance requirements
Proven success managing multiple concurrent projects with shared resources
Experience creating standardized processes for emerging technologies
