Job Summary and Qualifications
The Surgical Technologist Extern delivers high quality, patient-centered care by performing a variety of delegated basic patient care services to support the efficient operation of the surgical suite. Under the supervision of the Supv or Mgr, the Surgical Technologist Extern assists the surgical staff in the perioperative process in accordance with the Surgical Technologist Extern’s skills/training and the needs of the Department, and consistently assists the patient care team with maintaining a clean, well-organized, and safe patient care environment. The Surgical Technologist Extern is currently enrolled and in good standing in an approved school of surgical technology and can perform higher-level procedures once competency is achieved. Demonstrates team work and adaptability through consistently following the standards of Methodist Excellence.
Major Responsibilities:
- Collaborates with the leadership on staff and Surgical Tech to organize the operating suite with instruments, supplies, and equipment needed for the day. Reviews daily cases to ensure adequate stocking. Ensures proper functioning of equipment/instruments prior to procedures.
- Assists in creating and maintaining an orderly sterile instrument table. Utilizes physician preference cards for efficient setup.
- Assists in preparing for emergency and add on cases rapidly and effectively.
- Assists with providing care and comfort for the patient throughout the perioperative process.
- Transports patients to and f rom surgical suite as needed.
- Aids in the transfer, positioning, prepping and draping of patients for surgical procedures in accordance with hospital standards.
- Performs and/or assists in scrub/gown/glove process for self and team.
- Assists surgical team during each procedure as instructed, including passing instruments, operating specialty equipment, patient monitoring, handling of medications or specimens, replenishing supplies. Performs more advanced duties once competency is achieved.
- Assists in completing all sponge, sharp, and instrument counts and reports all discrepancies to the nurse or surgeon.
- Assists with room turnover, including cleaning, restocking of supplies, and setup/cleaning/removal of equipment and instrumentation as needed.
- Participates in patient and procedural verification.
- Responds to lifesaving situations, including f ire and disaster situations.
- Responds promptly to on-call situations as scheduled.
- Helps maintain a safe, organized environment for personnel and patients. Demonstrates commitment to patient safety initiatives including patient falls and restraints.
- Ensures patient privacy and comfort. Maintains confidentiality of patient information and records, and advocates for patient rights as needed.
- Applies the principles of asepsis to ensure the prevention of infection and maintain optimum patient care. Follows universal precautions as required by hospital and OSHA policies.
- Demonstrates effective communication skills when interacting with patients, family members, physicians, and co - workers. Utilizes appropriate chains of command to communicate pertinent information.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the occurrence reporting system. Uses system to report potential patient safety issues.
- Contributes to performance improvement initiatives and works toward meeting and exceeding core measures, patient safety, and service excellence goals.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Practices and adheres to the “Code of Conduct” and “Mission and Value Statement.”
Education & Experience
- Preferred: High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent
- Required: Currently enrolled in an approved Surgical Technologist program
Licensure, Certification, Training
- Required: Basic Life Saving (BLS) - within 30 Days
