About IA&R (Independent Assurance and Regulation)
IA&R has been providing risk based, proportionate, independent oversight and assurance to the civil and defence nuclear industry for over 60 years. This role provides a diverse and exciting range of opportunities to support the UK submarine programme in relation to structures, systems and components associated to emergent issues in-service, during manufacturing, plant-life extension and through next generation concept design, to ensure the Continuous At-Sea Deterrent (CASD).
This role can be based in either Bristol or Warrington with travel to customer sites required bi-monthly.
Technical Capability – Mechanical
The Mechanical Engineering team operates within the developing Mechanical Engineering Centre of Excellence (CoE). The mechanical engineer is responsible for delivering high-quality expertise across IA&R projects, contracts, and operations. The role involves conducting independent assessment/peer review of safety case related documentation to ensure that systems, technologies, and processes are safe, effective, compliant, and future-ready.
Key Accountabilities:
Engineering Delivery Across IA&R
Provide mechanical engineering support to projects, contracts, and operational teams across IA&R.
Support delivery teams with technical advice, problem-solving, and assurance including:
Providing formal independent nuclear safety and technical assessment/peer review of documents relating to nuclear propulsion plant systems and components, and delivering written assessment output, which may be presented to relevant safety and technical committees.
Performing assurance activities (inspection, advice and assessment) for all types of mechanical systems and components that provide nuclear safety functions in reactor primary and secondary systems, and also dockside facilities.
Standards Application & Technical Assurance
Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement
Work collaboratively with other engineering disciplines, quality, safety, and delivery teams.
Communicate engineering requirements, constraints, and solutions clearly to stakeholders.
Capability Development & Knowledge Sharing

Support mentoring and development of graduate and early-career engineers where appropriate.
Here’s What You’ll Need
Technical competence and experience in mechanical engineering. Demonstrated through Engineering or Scientific Degree.
Knowledge and understanding of the ageing/failure mechanisms of high integrity pumps, valves and other reactor system components.
Experience of relevant mechanical design and safety standards.
Experience within a highly regulated industry such as nuclear or aerospace.
Strong awareness of engineering risk, safety, and quality requirements. An ability to critically assess complex technical and safety arguments, based upon knowledge and understanding and communicate the findings effectively.
Ability to work effectively across a matrix organisation.
Ability to clearly communicate with customers and stakeholders both verbally and in written form.
Commitment to professional development and contribution to CoE development.
Knowledge of the below would be advantageous but not essential:
Experience of conducting checking or IPR of others’ work
Knowledge of Pressurised Water Reactor systems for naval propulsion or civil power generation applications
Experience relating to high integrity mechanical handling equipment in naval or civil nuclear, or other safety critical applications
Understanding of nuclear safety case requirements, including knowledge of the Office for Nuclear Regulation’s (ONR) Safety Assessment Principles (SAPs) and Technical Assessment Guides (TAGs)
