Responsibilities:
Support space flight and flight development projects as a failure analyst of avionics systems, assemblies, and components by utilizing both non-destructive and destructive testing methods to identify root causes of failures that will drive design and process improvements. Failure analysis is a critical activity that serves NASA and other agency customers. This role is a hands-on position, working directly in the Failure Analysis Laboratory. The Failure Analysis Laboratory enables the evaluation, test, and root cause analysis of electrical, electronic, and electromechanical parts and avionics assemblies. The position may also support and lead research and development activities.
Performance and support that is required of the candidate includes but is not limited to:
Conduct failure analysis of electrical and electronics systems in a laboratory and the development of congruent failure analysis methodology.
Determine root cause of failures and/or failure modes using non-destructive and destructive methods.
Assist or lead investigations into nonconforming product.
Operate laboratory equipment such as Scanning Electron Microscopes (SEM), Energy-Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), 2D X-ray, 3D Computed Tomography (CT), X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy, among other tools and equipment.
Provide clear and concise written and verbal communication to NASA Management, Project Personnel, Contractors, and other agencies including written reports and presentations.
Participate in project meetings as required.
Conduct technical briefings and reviews.
Write technical reports.
Review, revise, or develop technical specifications and standards.
Undertake advanced problem solving and detailed analysis to understand failure mechanism, root-cause and any contributing factors
Collaborate with technical experts from cross-functional engineering teams
Continue to develop specialized knowledge in the discipline. Has awareness of latest technical developments. Contributes towards greater group strategy and ensures timely delivery of data / communication with internal customers.
Develop the technical expertise of junior engineers and provide ongoing mentorship to support their professional development.
Qualifications:
Education: The following education and experience levels are required:
BS Degree in Materials Science, Physics or Electrical/Mechanical Engineering or related field with a minimum of 30 years applicable experience or,
MS degree in Engineering, Physics or related field with a minimum of 28 years applicable experience or,
PhD degree in Engineering, Physics or related field with 24 years of applicable experience
Skills: The following skills are required or desired, as indicated:
A solid foundation and knowledge of materials science is required.
A solid foundation and knowledge of electronic components is required.
Subject matter expertise in avionics failure analysis, including a thorough understanding of the mechanical and electrical causes of component and assembly failures in space flight hardware, is required.
Skill in cross section analysis, including skills in sample potting and cross sectioning, and chemical etching is required.
Prior Failure Analysis experience with exposure to failure mechanisms identification and root cause analysis process of is required.
Operational / hands-on knowledge of laboratory equipment and the ability to interpret the results including microscopy, SEM, EDS, 2D X-ray, 3D CT, XRF, FTIR equipment is required.
An understanding of ultrasonic scan / CSAM analysis and techniques is desired.
An understanding of new tools and methods being used to assess commercial and automotive grade parts is desired.
Experience in NASA & MIL standards related to EEE parts is required.
Strong oral and technical writing skills are required.
Demonstrated ability to analyze and resolve problems. Self-motivated and proactive, with agility to navigate complex environments with challenging timelines and/or changing priorities.
Strong analytical skills with a methodical and creative approach, with strong attention to detail to enable smart failure analysis investigation and support fact-based decision-making processes and related actions.
Experience in proposal development is desired.
Ability to obtain a security clearance is desired.
Essential Functions
Work Environment:
Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (5%). Requires ability to work at a computer for long periods of time (100%).
Physical Requirements:
Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and our facilities (10%).
Equipment and Machines:
Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).
Attendance:
Normal workday 7:30-4:30, Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity, and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.
Other Essential Functions:
The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
