Hinkley Point C (HPC) is the first new nuclear power station to be built in the UK in over 20 years, HPCs two EPR reactors will be capable of generating 3.26GW of secure, low carbon electricity for 60 years, enough electricity to power around 6 million homes. As Technical Lead Engineer - Mechanical, contributing to complex construction topics at HPC and you’ll be helping us to make sure we continue to deliver technical excellence for the project.
The successful applicant will be a key member of the wider Technical Branch of the Joint Design Office [JDO], operating as part a team responsible for resolving critical, cross discipline design issues and engaging multidisciplinary specialists. The role offers exposure to a broad spectrum of technical topics across the project, driving resolution of technical issues, strengthen engineering delivery and enhance resilience of the JDO by proactively mitigating key project engineering risks.
Key Responsibilities:
Build and maintain sustainable long-term relationships within JDO, engaging with SMEs, Technical Authority, Operational teams and Responsible Designer, while also fostering collaboration across the wider project with Project Managers, Contract Managers, and Construction and Installation Contractors.
Collaborate with JDO Operational team to resolve complex technical challenges.
Prepare and author technical reviews, justification papers, and formal judgment documents.
Safeguard the integrity of safety case for all proposed changes impacting nuclear safety.
Deliver surveillance of design changes undertaken by the JDO Operational teams and Responsible Designer.
Represent the client organisation with clear and sound decision making, assessing risks and understanding the wider impact of change.
Apply UK regulatory and construction context in all design and delivery activities.
Demonstrate and embed the ALARP principle through practical and tangible implementation.
Champion the identification, evaluation, and integration of technical innovations and improvements to drive enhanced efficiency, quality, safety, and delivery outcomes at HPC.
Engage constructively with internal and external Regulators to provide assurance and oversight of technical compliance and nuclear safety.
Leverage the expertise of nuclear services effectively, drawing on specialist advice to ensure delivery confidence and technical excellence.
Serve as custodian of the Nuclear Baseline, maintaining SQEP standards and integrity of all safety justifications.
Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience
Degree (or equivalent) in Engineering
Demonstrable evidence of problem solving and stakeholder management
Understanding of civil and mechanical interfaces
Experience of onsite engineering
Appreciation of welding in a site and fabrication setting
Chartered Engineer (or equivalent)
Previous experience working in the Nuclear Industry
Working in engineering design
EPR building, plant and system knowledge
Safety Case Knowledge and previous experience of Nuclear Safety Categorisations
