Job Title
Software Engineering Director - Billing Platform
About Your Role
Clover is a global leader in point-of-sale and business management solutions, empowering millions of merchants and developers through our innovative App Market. As the Software Engineering Director, you will be the strategic architect and organizational leader for the Clover App Market Billing team—a high-impact, global group of senior server and full-stack engineers, data specialists, and operational experts.
Your mission is to transform our core billing platform into a world-class, event-driven cloud service capable of navigating the high-friction intersection of modern fintech, legacy banking, and global regulatory compliance. We are looking for a Pragmatic Visionary: a leader who is as comfortable debating ACID compliance in distributed databases as they are presenting CAPEX/OPEX strategies to executive leadership.
What You’ll Do
- Technical Strategy & Roadmap: Own the long-term technical vision for Clover’s Billing platform, transitioning legacy logic into a scalable, multi-tenant cloud architecture that meets global settlement, tax, and compliance needs.
- Engineering Advocacy: Act as a "Leader of Leaders," balancing the delivery of high-velocity product features with the necessity of reducing technical debt and maintaining architectural integrity.
- Cross-Functional Influence: Partner with Product, Design, and Finance at the executive level to align engineering roadmaps with global commercial expansion.
- Build a "Bar-Raising" Culture: Lead the end-to-end talent lifecycle—from recruiting and onboarding "10x" engineering talent to sponsoring the career growth of your managers and senior individual contributors.
- Operational Excellence: Drive a culture of "Automate Everything," utilizing DORA metrics and SRE principles to ensure 99.99% availability for our global developer ecosystem.
- Risk & Governance: Navigate global audit, PCI, and tax governance, ensuring that technical designs are auditable, secure, and resilient against the complexities of international fintech.
Experience You’ll Need
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or Engineering (Master’s preferred).
- Fintech Mastery: 8+ years of experience in Fintech, banking, or high-volume payment processing. Deep familiarity with reconciliation logic, pro-rata billing, and global tax jurisdictional requirements.
- Leadership Depth: 12+ years of total software engineering experience, with 6+ years in a people leadership role, specifically managing distributed teams and "leading leaders" (Managers or Principal Engineers).
- Architectural Fluency: Strong hands-on background in distributed systems, microservices, and event-driven architectures (Java/Spring/GCP ecosystem).
- Cloud Native DNA: Proven experience operating at scale within GCP/AWS, including deep knowledge of Kubernetes, CI/CD maturity, and cloud-cost optimization.
- Executive Communication: Exceptional ability to translate complex technical trade-offs into business-impact narratives for all levels of the organization.
Experience That Would Be Great to Have
- Hands-on Java Expert: Ability to conduct deep-dive architectural reviews within a Java/Spring Boot environment.
- Database Specialist: Deep experience with MySQL/Aurora and optimizing relational databases for high-transaction financial consistency.
- Modern Interface Knowledge: Experience with RESTful APIs and modern frontend frameworks (React) to ensure a seamless self-service developer experience.
- Scale: Previous experience managing a billing platform handling hundreds of millions in annual GMV or processing millions of multi-currency transactions daily.
How you’ll work:
- This role is on-site Monday through Friday. Fiserv considers in-person collaboration to be an essential part of this role as in-person office experiences help you with your overall onboarding experience and leads to stronger productivity.
