Job Summary and Qualifications
Job Summary The Registered Nurse in the Neuro EP Lab provides specialized nursing care to patients undergoing diagnostic and therapeutic neurophysiology procedures. The RN collaborates with neurologists, neurosurgeons, neurodiagnostic technologists, and anesthesia staff to ensure safe, high-quality patient care before, during, and after procedures. Responsibilities may include care of patients undergoing EEG monitoring, evoked potential testing, epilepsy monitoring, intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring, and other advanced neurological procedures.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform comprehensive patient assessments before neurological procedures.
- Review patient history, medications, allergies, and laboratory results.
- Educate patients and families about planned procedures and obtain/document informed consent as appropriate.
- Monitor neurological status, cardiac rhythm, oxygenation, and vital signs throughout procedures.
- Administer medications, including moderate sedation when permitted by institutional policy and certification.
- Recognize and respond to neurological or cardiopulmonary emergencies, including seizures and changes in neurologic status.
- Assist physicians and neurodiagnostic technologists during diagnostic and interventional procedures.
- Maintain sterile technique and infection prevention standards when applicable.
- Document assessments, interventions, medications, and patient responses accurately in the electronic medical record.
- Coordinate patient recovery, discharge instructions, and communication with inpatient units or outpatient providers.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and maintain compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards.
