Job Summary and Qualifications
Under the general supervision of the Director of Laboratory Services or Laboratory Services coordinator/ General Supervisor Medical Technologist on duty, the Lead Phlebotomist is responsible for the skillful collection of blood samples, blood culture samples and other body fluid samples from inpatient and outpatient populations ranging in age from neonatal through geriatric. The Lead Phlebotomist may also be responsible for the performance of EKG studies (after appropriate training). The Lead Phlebotomist must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide sample collection service appropriate to the patients served in the department. In addition, they will coordinate all sample requirements, processing and resulting for all reference laboratory services They must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess phlebotomy needs and techniques required for the patient’s status and age specific needs. The Lead Phlebotomist will also perform sample processing functions and laboratory clerical duties including answering telephone inquiries from clients. The Lead Phlebotomist must adhere to established policies and procedures in the performance of assigned duties.
What qualifications you will need:
- High school graduate or GED.
- Formal training as a Medical Assistant or a graduate of an accredited Phlebotomy Training Program is preferred.
- Excellent communication skills are required.
- Medical Terminology, computer knowledge and CPR certification are preferred.
- On the job training for EKGs with the cardiology nurse is required for staff working in the pre-admit/outpatient service center.
- Licensed by the State of Nevada as a Laboratory Assistant (or within 6 months of hire date as per Nevada Regulations)
- 6 months of work experience in a clinical laboratory is preferred. May consider a recent graduate of an accredited phlebotomy training program.
