Amazon Leo is Amazon’s Low Earth Orbit satellite network, with a mission to deliver fast, reliable internet connectivity to customers beyond the reach of existing networks. From individual households to schools, hospitals, businesses, and government agencies, Amazon Leo will connect people and organizations operating in locations without reliable connectivity.
The Leo Network Observability, Visibility & Analytics team builds the systems that provide deep, end-to-end insight into the health, performance, and reliability of this global telecom network. Our systems span the full Leo service—from satellites and customer terminals to ground gateways, cloud services, and terrestrial network infrastructure—and enable engineers to understand network behavior, rapidly detect failures, and diagnose complex issues across space and ground infrastructure.
We are looking for a talented Software Development Engineer II to design, build, and operate network observability and analytics solutions for an advanced global telecommunications service spanning both space and terrestrial networks.
As a software engineer on this team, you will build high-scale systems that transform telemetry, network events, traces, and operational signals into actionable visibility. You will work across distributed systems, networking, data pipelines, real-time analytics, and visualization to answer critical questions such as: Is the network healthy? Where is a failure occurring? What is its customer impact? And how quickly can we identify and resolve it?
You will collaborate closely with network engineers, scientists, and software engineers to develop novel mechanisms for end-to-end network visibility and diagnostics. Your work will help establish the observability foundations required to operate a highly distributed telecom network where failures can span satellites, beams, customer terminals, gateways, cloud services, and terrestrial infrastructure.
Export Control Requirement: Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
Key job responsibilities
- Design and develop highly scalable network observability, telemetry, and analytics systems spanning space and terrestrial infrastructure.
- Build real-time and near-real-time pipelines that ingest and correlate high-volume network telemetry, events, traces, and health signals.
- Develop algorithms and services that provide end-to-end network visibility, including failure detection, localization, correlation, and impact analysis.
- Build tools and platforms that enable engineers to quickly understand network health and diagnose complex, multi-hop failures.
- Design distributed systems capable of processing large volumes of telemetry while maintaining high availability, durability, and low latency.
- Develop APIs, services, dashboards, and analytical tools that expose network health and operational insights to internal customers.
- Work closely with network engineers and scientists to translate complex networking problems into robust software solutions.
- Establish metrics, service-level indicators, and automated detection mechanisms for critical Leo network components.
- Design systems that remain resilient in the presence of intermittent connectivity, partial failures, delayed telemetry, and unreliable network paths.
- Participate in the full software development lifecycle, including architecture, implementation, testing, deployment, operational readiness, and on-call support.
- Drive technical decisions across team boundaries and contribute to engineering standards for observability, reliability, and operational excellence.
- Mentor other engineers and contribute to a culture of high-quality, secure, and maintainable software development.
A day in the life
You will work on problems at the intersection of distributed systems, networking, telemetry, and large-scale analytics. One day you might design a streaming architecture capable of processing telemetry from millions of network components; another day you might develop a mechanism to identify where packet loss occurred across a multi-hop satellite and terrestrial path.
You will work with network engineers and scientists to understand how Leo’s network behaves, develop new ways to make that behavior observable, and turn large volumes of operational data into actionable information. You will also own services in production and work through real operational challenges as the network scales.
This role provides opportunities to work across the stack—from telemetry collection on network infrastructure and embedded systems, through distributed data pipelines and analytics, to the APIs and visualization tools used by engineers operating the Leo network.
About the team
The Leo Network Observability, Visibility & Analytics team is responsible for making a highly distributed global telecom network understandable and operable at scale.
We build the visibility layer that connects network signals across satellites, customer terminals, gateways, cloud services, and terrestrial infrastructure. Our systems help transform individual telemetry signals into an end-to-end view of network health, enabling faster detection, diagnosis, and resolution of issues.
The problems we solve are inherently distributed and require us to combine software engineering with networking and data science. We are building new capabilities rather than simply applying existing observability patterns to a conventional cloud service.
If you enjoy solving ambiguous problems, designing distributed systems at significant scale, and building software that provides visibility into complex networks, this team offers an opportunity to work on foundational systems for Amazon Leo.
