Would you like to operate the world's largest cloud computing infrastructure and help U.S. Government agencies solve their most complex technical problems? AWS has established a specialized group of service teams responsible for the work we do with the U.S. Intelligence Community, building and operating some of the largest and most complex distributed systems in the world.
The US ADC Security Engineering team is seeking an experienced ADC Engineer to serve as a senior technical leader for our operations team. You will be the technical escalation point for the hardest operational issues, lead root cause analysis, build automation and tools that make the team faster and more reliable, and raise the bar on operational processes across teams. You will also mentor junior engineers and help them grow their troubleshooting and automation skills. You have deep experience with Linux, networking, and cloud services, and you know how to simplify solutions to complex problems while keeping the customer experience first.
This is a shift-work position. The team runs 24/7 operations, which may require you to work some nights and/or weekends.
This position requires that the candidate selected currently possess and maintain an active TS/SCI security clearance with polygraph.
Key job responsibilities
- Serve as the technical escalation point on shift for complex, large-scale distributed system issues, and make sound calls that balance operational risk.
- Lead root cause analysis for significant operational events, write Correction of Error (COE) documents, and drive action items to completion.
- Design, build, and maintain automation and tools that reduce manual toil and increase the speed and scale of the team.
- Find gaps in operational processes, runbooks, and handoffs, and drive improvements across teams.
- Mentor junior engineers through code reviews, troubleshooting guidance, and knowledge-sharing.
- Set the standard for documentation and operational readiness, and keep runbooks accurate and current.
A day in the life
You start your shift by reviewing escalations, alarms, and handoff notes, and helping the team decide what to work on first. When an issue goes beyond the runbooks, you take the lead, dive deep across application, host, and network layers, and guide the team to mitigation. Between events, you build automation and tools that remove repetitive work, review scripts and code from junior engineers, and work with partner teams to fix process gaps. After a significant event, you lead the root cause analysis and write the COE so the same issue doesn't happen again.
