KBR is seeking a System Operator to join its talented team in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. KBR is the primary contractor to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) for performing work at the Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center (http://eros.usgs.gov/) near Sioux Falls, SD (http://www.siouxfalls.org).
The System Operator would be responsible for providing active, multiple-shift control and monitoring oversight for the hardware and software resources that provide data ingest, archive, production and distribution services for a global, multidisciplinary program charged with tracking changes in the earth’s environment. This position is onsite at USGS EROS Data Center in Sioux Falls, SD.
Core Responsibilities:
- Monitor and control a complex integrated data archive, production and distribution system using custom and off-the-shelf software applications
- Monitor and provide oversight of the ingesting, archiving and distribution of products to include planning, problem analysis/resolution, trending and reporting
- Create, update and utilize standard operating procedures to effectively run the operational system as well as to resolve anomalies that may occur
- Utilize approved tools to prioritize the operational system services as well as to assist in resolving problems within the scope of the Operations Control Center
- Interface with the Operations teams with respect to the resolution of ingest anomalies
- Review software release documents and test reports covering new and or modified functionality against existing Operations policies and procedures. Propose modifications as appropriate to address operational concerns and requirements
- Perform reconciliations of the physical archive with the catalog databases and/or replicated databases. Update or monitor metadata quality flags that may exist in archive using appropriate tools and procedures. Record the results from those activities
- Follow applicable engineering procedures and guidelines appropriate to Operations such as software configuration management
- Generating and dissemination of monthly metrics for various data statistics.
- May be required at times to work a different work schedule to accommodate a special project situation, center wide maintenance or shift coverage for other co-workers.
- Occasional travel within the U.S. may be required
Education: BA/BS in an engineering or computer science discipline
Experience: Experience and understanding of the Earth Resources Observation & Science (EROS) systems and 4+ years of previous experience as an operator in an operational environment are a plus
Required Skills:
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills
- Adapt to rapidly changing operational needs and roles within the Operations Control Center team to quickly and effectively produce the best possible outcome for each situation
- A working knowledge of a physical archive and catalog databases (to include replicated databases) and an understanding of how catalog reconciliations are performed
- Ability to problem solve using sound judgment skills as well as problem solve by using sound data and analytic decision-making skills
- Ability to handle complex multi-task environments
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
Preferred Skills:
- AWS or like cloud experience in a supporting or user role.
- Basic understanding of containerized environments (ie: Docker, Kubernetes, Mesos)
- Linux familiarity and SQL experience desired
- Monitoring tools (ie: Nagios, Kibana, Xymon)
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Three years of continuous residency in the US for issuance of a Government Security credential
- The candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a national agency check and background investigation after hire to obtain a badge for government facility access and user accounts.
