About the Opportunity
Planning isn’t just a technical discipline at Amentum — it’s a strategic function that underpins delivery certainty, commercial control, and stakeholder trust. We’re delivering some of the most complex and nationally significant infrastructure and defence programmes in the UK. To lead this work, we’re looking for a Head of Planning with the credibility, clarity, and control to set the bar.
This role offers the opportunity to shape the future of our planning function across a major multi-year framework. You’ll define governance, assure performance, and build a high-impact team — all while representing planning at the highest levels across delivery, commercial, and client-facing environments
Roles and Responsibilities:
You’ll lead a team of Planning Managers and Senior Planners embedded across multiple projects and workstreams. Your influence will extend from day-to-day delivery through to programme assurance, client engagement, and strategic direction.
Your responsibilities will include:
Leading the planning function across a portfolio of major infrastructure and defence projects
Setting and enforcing planning governance, quality standards, and assurance frameworks
Owning the strategic approach to Cl.31 and Cl.32 programme management in line with NEC4 ECC obligations
Ensuring planning outputs directly support entitlement, CE substantiation, and commercial protection
Embedding short-term and lookahead planning discipline across delivery teams
Representing planning in client and PMO forums, governance reviews, and stakeholder meetings
Managing and developing a high-performing planning team — leading on line management, coaching, succession planning, and setting a culture of consistently high standards
Overseeing the integration of planning data into wider project controls and Power BI dashboards
Acting as a key contributor to continuous improvement, planning maturity, and business protection initiatives
Here’s What You’ll Need
Senior-level planning experience in complex infrastructure or defence programmes
Proven ability to lead and influence at project, portfolio, and client-facing level
Strong technical grounding in NEC4 ECC programme obligations (Cl.31/Cl.32, EWN, CE impact)
Track record of implementing and enforcing planning standards and assurance processes
Confidence in representing planning during commercial negotiations, client reviews, and governance forums
High proficiency in Primavera P6, including programme structuring, quality assurance, and reporting logic
Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills — able to build trust, challenge constructively, and maintain high standards under pressure
Any offer of employment will be strictly subject to the relevant security requirements for the role being met. This means that you will need to have, or be able to obtain, Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) clearance and either Security Check (SC) or Developed Vetting (DV) clearance. The security clearance process may require non-British nationals or dual nationals (i.e. those with British and another nationality) to be subject to additional evaluation, depending on nationalities held and the nature of the work to be carried out
