KBR is seeking a Boatswain’s Mate Subject Matter Expert (SME) in Newport, Rhode Island, to serve as the principal advisor to the Surface Warfare School Command (SWSC) N72 Director for Navy‑wide Boatswain’s Mate training, qualification, and curriculum development. This role provides senior‑level technical leadership while acting as an on‑site coordinator who drives execution across instructors, stakeholders, and Navy partners. The position blends deep deck and seamanship expertise with day‑to‑day leadership, curriculum oversight, and cross‑functional coordination to ensure training products remain current, compliant, and operationally relevant. The SME plays a critical role in shaping BM community readiness across the fleet by influencing training strategy, policy alignment, and implementation outcomes. This role is based on site in Newport, Rhode Island and directly supports the Surface Warfare School Command mission.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Serve as the principal technical advisor to SWSC N72 leadership on all Boatswain’s Mate training, qualification, and curriculum matters, ensuring Navy‑wide alignment and execution
- Act as the on‑site lead coordinating curriculum development efforts, priorities, and deliverables across instructors, curriculum developers, and external stakeholders
- Lead the development, maintenance, and lifecycle management of all Boatswain’s Mate training courses, ensuring accuracy, standardization, and operational relevance
- Oversee and guide updates to Boatswain’s Mate‑related NAVEDTRA manuals (including 14343, 12968, and 14067), ensuring timely incorporation of policy and fleet changes
- Direct the development and sustainment of Personnel Qualification Standards (PQS) including NAVEDTRA 43220, 43152, and 43492‑2 series
- Coordinate with Type Commanders (TYCOMs) to assess Boatswain’s Mate and Deck community health, identify gaps, and support initiatives for improvement
- Advise on the integration of emergent training and certification requirements (MOB‑S, MOB‑A, SAR, AMW) into courses, manuals, and qualification products
- Serve as the SWSC representative to Standards Review Boards, leading coordination and feedback for seamanship and amphibious publications (NSTM, NTTP, NTRP, NWP)
- Provide day‑to‑day leadership and guidance to others involved in training execution, ensuring alignment to standards, schedules, and stakeholder expectations
- Influence the adoption of emerging training technologies and instructional methods to enhance Boatswain’s Mate training effectiveness and delivery
Basic Qualifications
- Education & Years of experience options: BS/BA & 5+ years of experience, OR AA/AS & 9+ years of experience, OR High School Diploma & 13+ years of experience
- Military background: Prior service as a Surface Deck Limited Duty Officer (LDO), designator 6110 or Experience serving in a Ship’s Boatswain role or Experience as a Master Training Specialist or Prior experience as a Surface Warfare Officer.
- Secret Clearance
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience coordinating or leading Navy training programs across multiple stakeholders
- Experience supporting Navy‑wide curriculum governance, review boards, or training policy development
Scheduled Weekly Hours: 40 hours/week.
Compensation: $76K-$114K. The salary range posted is based on the national average. The offered rate will be based on the selected candidate’s location, knowledge, skills, abilities, and/or experience, contract affordability, and in consideration of internal parity.
Additional Compensation: KBR may offer bonuses, commissions, or other forms of compensation to certain job titles or levels per internal policy or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, short-term incentives, long-term incentives, or discretionary payments for exceptional performance.
