Job Summary and Qualifications
Performs the essential duties associated with planning/cooking/preparing foods for service to all customers, inclusive, but not limited to, all patient meals, cafeteria service, and special catering functions for the facility and cafeteria. Participates in providing patient specific care standards as directed, and follows service excellence standards to ensure high levels of patient satisfaction.
ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
•Complies with hospital/departmental policies and procedures, i.e., attendance, mandatory education, safety, infection control, etc.
•Reviews production sheets to determine types and quantities of main entrees, meats, soups, and vegetables to be prepared.
•Follows standardized recipe for production of items to insure consistent quality.
•Checks temperature of items as needed.
•Completes accuracy in preparing the number requested.
•Utilizes recommended garnishes for products.
•Follows City of Austin, Texas Department of Health and JCAHO standards for food production, food service, and food storage.
•Follow temperature recommendations for service, storage and preparation of foods.
•Completes department documentation of food products as required.
•Completes HACCP documentation and follows plan in department.
•Follows cleaning and sanitation guidelines.
•Follows infection control guidelines for cross contamination.
•Plans cooking schedule and service to insure that food will be ready at specific times for tray line, cafeteria, physician’s dining rooms, and catered events. Confers with supervisors and staff regarding diet modifications of meal items.
•Follows recommended procedures of texture changes of food items.
•Makes sure service of mealtime is consistent.
•Completes equipment readying as required for service. Makes sure each unit is turned on and off appropriately and that there is water in steam wells.
•Utilizes weigh scale to monitor over production.
•Is ready for tray line, café service and service to doctor’s lounge consistently.
•Sets up area for service including utilization of portion control serving utensils, appropriate garnishes, and service condiments, and makes sure this is done in a timely manner.
•Completes tray planting of foods for customer following supervision.
•Breaks down area of service, cleans, sanitizes, and stores items appropriately.
•Maintains a clean work area during and at the end of the shift.
• Follows assigned cleaning schedule.
•Maintains a clean container of sanitizer with a clean cloth, uses and rinses the cloth frequently, leaves cloth in solution when not in use.
•Cleans and washes additional pots/small wares utilized during preparation as needed. Cleans floors, large equipment and other areas as needed according to sanitation checklist.
•Stores all pots/small wares/utensils appropriately.
•Documents appropriate quality control data and temperature logs for coolers, pass through units, line service, sanitation sink, and any other assigned data documentation needed in accordance with all health codes and standards.
•Takes out trash as needed and directed; cleans trashcan and places new liner.
•Assists with delivery of food to various stations for service.
•Uses timely delivery and appropriate carts for delivery.
•Follows department policy for preparation and service of food products.
•Uses equipment and small utensils properly. Uses standardized portion control for service.
•Prepares items ahead and follows recommendations for prepping the day before.
•Reviews menus on weekly basis and forecasts production needs.
•Pulls foods from freeze in timely manner, prior day’s production.
•When following the task list of the position working for the day, completes the activities as required in a timely manner.
•Assists with other positions as able and trained.
•Completes specific tasks as required for position.
•Assists with customer service as needed for department.
•Assists with training as needed with new employees.
•Employee’s conduct must reflect the Company’s values and a commitment to the Code of Conduct ethics and compliance program.
•Employee reflects SDH Service Excellence standards in every interaction.
•Other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Must be able to demonstrate understanding of national patient safety initiatives by strict compliance to all safety protocols and procedures as required by both HCA and St. David’s Surgical Hospital Required: Must be able to read, write, and follow written/oral instruction.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Required: Minimum of one year of experience in healthcare or retail food service in cook and/or supervisory position
Preferred: High School Diploma or GED equivalent
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES:
Required: Current ServSafe Food Handler Permit, Travis County Health Department Food Handler Card or State Food Safety permit within 7 days of hire date.

St. David’s North Austin Medical Center, part of St. David’s HealthCare, is a full-service medical center providing comprehensive medical care at two locations – St. David’s North Austin Medical Center and St. David’s Surgical Hospital.
St. David’s North Austin Medical Center is a 460+ bed, multi-specialty, acute care hospital. It provides advanced women’s health services, including maternity and newborn care with Level I, II, and III neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) at the nearby St. David’s Women’s Center of Texas. The hospital also offers minimally invasive gynecological surgery and comprehensive breast imaging through Solis Mammography, which is located on-site. Other services include a 24-hour emergency department, pediatric emergency care, and intensive care at St. David’s Children’s Hospital. The hospital also features the Texas Institute for Robotic Surgery, bariatric (weight loss) surgery, a Heart and Vascular Center, neurology and neurosurgery, a kidney transplant program, a Level IV Epilepsy Center, as well as inpatient and outpatient surgery and acute rehabilitation services for both inpatients and outpatients.
St. David’s Women’s Center of Texas, located at St. David's North Austin Medical Center, is recognized by the State of Texas as a Level IV Maternal Facility. This means it provides the highest level of care for pregnant and postpartum patients, especially those with serious or complex medical, surgical, or pregnancy-related conditions, including those at high risk for maternal morbidity or mortality. The center includes a 95+ bed Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) with 30+ private rooms, 10+ rooms for very small babies, and 10+ beds for babies needing neurological care. It also has 35+ labor, delivery, and recovery rooms, including Central Texas’ first low-intervention birthing suites with tubs. There are 95+ postpartum beds, 20+ antepartum beds, and Cesarean section surgical suites. The facility offers 24/7 neonatology coverage, OB/GYN hospitalists, maternal-fetal medicine specialists, lactation consultants, and a midwifery program. It is part of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Maternal-Fetal Medicine Units Network and TexasAIM, and it also provides a high-risk pregnancy navigation and support program.
St. David's Surgical Hospital is part of St. David’s North Austin Medical Center and is the first Level 4 Epilepsy Center in Central Texas for both adults and children. It has its own 24-hour emergency department, a medical-surgical inpatient unit, and a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) for patients ages 17 and under. The hospital is staffed with pediatric emergency physicians, pediatric hospitalists, intensivists, and other specialists who are specially trained to care for children. It also includes certified child-life specialists who help kids feel more comfortable during their hospital stay. St. David’s Children’s Hospital offers many pediatric services, such as pediatric surgery, pediatric radiology (including imaging and interventional procedures), and pediatric anesthesia for surgical support. It also has a wide range of pediatric specialists available for consultation and treatment, including general surgery, ENT (ear, nose, and throat), craniofacial and plastic surgery, neurology, neurosurgery, urology, and cardiology, among others.
