This position will support the Space Suits and Exploration Operations (SSEO) Technical Area, which conducts research and provides operational expertise on tasks supporting optimal Human Health and Performance for extravehicular activities (EVAs). Disciplines include Extravehicular Activity (EVA) physiology and possible support to exercise physiology and countermeasures. This position will provide support for human research studies directed toward development and evaluation of suited health and performance outcomes and new hardware to support upcoming planetary Exploration missions.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Work with the NASA Lab Lead(s) and Technical Area lead(s) to implement research activities outlined in the Integrated EVA Human Research Plan and the Exercise and Performance Strategic Roadmap
- Assist with coordination of human research studies and engineering evaluations, including scheduling and integration with study team, stakeholders and collaborators
- Prepare study documentation, including Institutional Review Board protocols, test plans, test readiness review packages, progress reports, etc.
- Design and maintain data acquisition systems
- Perform equipment set-up, calibration, and monitoring for tests/evaluations
- Monitor human subjects and collect physiological data during research studies and/or operational training, including at analog facilities and field locations
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Responsible for compliance with Safety, Health and Environmental plan; must be committed to a high standard of safety and be willing and able to comply with all safety laws and all of the Company’s safety policies and rules and must be willing to report safety violations and potential safety violations to appropriate supervisory or management personnel
- Responsible for compliance with the Quality Assurance Plan, policies and procedures
- Responsible for completing all assigned training
Education/Experience
REQUIRED:
- Bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering, physiology, or related science field and approximately 10 years of experience or combination of graduate-level education and experience is required
- Experience conducting human health and performance research, including physiological monitoring and/or kinematic analysis
- Must be a US citizen or legal permanent resident
DESIRED:
- A master’s degree in biomedical engineering, physiology, or related science field and 5 years of applicable experience, or a Ph.D. with at least 2 years of applicable experience.
- Experience evaluating hardware, such as wearable sensors or other health-related equipment
- Applied physiologist experience in offloading analogs and extreme environments
- Experience with implementation of operational studies to evaluate human performance and human-system interactions, especially related to spaceflight
- Successful grant writing experience
Skills/Training
REQUIRED:
- Demonstrated ability to work with an inter-disciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and medical doctors
- Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team member; employee will be required to work and communicate with human test subjects, astronauts, personnel across multiple JSC directorates and external collaborators
- Highly motivated with developed organizational skills; must be able to work independently with minimal oversight and support multiple projects
- Effective written and verbal communication skills, both formal and informal, including oral presentations
- Standard PC and Microsoft Office skills for preparation of documents and presentations
DESIRED:
- Ability to critically analyze data and perform statistical analysis
- Experience with spaceflight related analogs and/or simulations, including augmented/hybrid reality
- Demonstrated skill in preparation of technical reports
- Experience with bioinstrumentation and data acquisition systems
- Experience with CAD and modeling tools such as SolidWorks, ProE, Blender, Polyworks
- Experience with 3D printing/additive manufacturing
- Experience with MATLAB, R, Python programming, or equivalent
