Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) is the Air Force’s graduate school of engineering and management, as well as its institution for technical professional continuing education. AFIT is committed to providing defense-focused graduate and professional continuing education and research to sustain the technological supremacy of America’s air and space forces. Through their mission to develop and deliver systems engineering and management education, the education faculty rely on interns to support classroom training products, techniques, and tools. Objectives of this effort are to:
- Conduct graduate-level research, engineering/technical analyses, technical evaluations, and assessments for AFIT
- Enhance AFIT’s ability to execute their mission of conducting militarily-relevant research, delivering analytic tools to DoD organizations, and producing defense-related publications
- Provide scientific and technical analyses of military and commercial developments including design, development, testing, and evaluation of military-critical technologies
Job Summary
KBR requires a team member for an Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) Contract under the KBR Research and Development Program. This candidate provides supplementary machining, maintenance, and design support for the research efforts of AFIT Graduate School students and faculty in six academic departments. The person chosen will work from start to finish to make one item very well, then move onto the next item. This position is located on WPAFB and is full-time through 4-10hr days. The right applicant will have experience in most of the areas listed below.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Set up and operation of machines such as:
- ProtoTrak mills and lathes
- CNC Milling Centers
- Waterjet
- Surface grinders
- Wire EDM
- EDM hole burners
- CO2/Fiber Laser
- 3D printers
- MIG & TIG welders
- Horizontal and vertical band saws
- Woodworking equipment
- Paint application equipment
- Write CNC programs using machine controllers, DXFs, conversational software and CAM software to machine parts for projects.
- Hand finishing, alteration, and fitment of machined components and assemblies
- Assist in design and machining of parts and assemblies using CAD, paper sketches, and verbal directions
- Consult with students, staff, and professors to design, manufacture, inspect, and finish components and assemblies
- Troubleshooting of machined assemblies and mechanical systems
- Shop maintenance and upkeep
- Basic blueprint comprehension and interpretation
- Working knowledge of basic machining principals
- Ability to stand for long periods of time
- Ability to walk, push, reach overhead and bend to the floor
- Ability to exert up to 10 pounds of force regularly
- Ability to perform repetitive movements over an extended period of time
- Ability to repeatedly lift objects weighing up to 10 pounds; objects up to 50 pounds occasionally
- Ability to communicate with customers via phone, email, Teams, chat, and in person
- Ability to apply basic tolerances and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
- Ability to operate Microsoft Office software & troubleshoot basic computer issues
- Ability to use basic measurement tools (calipers, micrometers, indicators)
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in related field or
- Associate degree or Vocational school certificate in Computer Aided Manufacturing or related field AND 5 years machine or model shop experience; in lieu of formal education, 8 years relevant experience is required
- CAD experience
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with
- SolidWorks
- Hurco Winmax mill setup, programming, and operation.
- Omax waterjet setup, programming, and operation.
- CAM Software, EdgeCam preferred
- Working with exotic alloys and difficult to machine metals
- Reverse engineering components
- Metrology equipment like a CMM, optical comparator, or faro arm
- Making tolerance decisions without a blueprint
