CH2M HILL BWXT West Valley, LLC (CHBWV) is the prime contractor selected by the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Phase 1 – Facility Disposition Project at the West Valley Demonstration Project. The site is a scenic 30-minute drive south of Buffalo, New York. In cooperation with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, CHBWV continues to decontaminate and decommission facilities at this site.

JOB SUMMARY/PURPOSE OF POSITION
The Safety Specialist I is responsible for performing basic control tasks in connection with the company’s safety and health and fire program and assists management in developing, implementing, and monitoring programs and procedures to ensure compliance with contractual, federal, state, and local requirements. Perform Safety related program tasks under management direction. Apply knowledge of codes and standards for successful customer interfaces.
REQUIREMENTS/SPECIFICATIONS
- BA/BS in Safety and Health or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to occupation.
B. Other Requirements:
- Knowledge of 10 CFR 851 Worker Safety and health Program, DOE Order (O) 420.1C, Facility Safety, NFPA Standards, and OSHA Standards preferred.
- Problem-solving skills.
- Ability to interface with internal and external customers.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES/SCOPE OF WORK
- Maintain a safe and healthful work environment by following established safe work practices and procedures; including following all safety rules, use of proper personal protective equipment (PPE), investigating and reporting identified safety concerns or situations.
- Adhere to standards contained in the Company “Code of Conduct,” Company EEO practices, and DOE directives.
- Define operational control methods which are consistent to ensure the health and safety of personnel and the protection of property.
- Prepare specifications for fire and or safety protection equipment.
- Participate in audits of safety practices.
- Participate in the Human Performance Improvement, VPP and ISMS programs.
- Provide support to Safety Supervisor, Safety Engineer, Industrial Hygienist, and Safety Technicians with application of health and safety standards.
- Observe acceptance test of fire protection systems for compliance to specifications and procedures.
- Prepare reports and other special assignments as directed.
- Audit facilities to ensure compliance with fire and or safety codes.
- Provide support to FP Engineer for performing, scheduling, and tracking surveillances, assessments, and scheduling and tracking FP audits.
- Maintain FP activities including assisting FP Engineers with the application of the DOE Fire Protection Standards.
- Provide technical guidance to support all FP activities performed within FP systems which involve FP compliance, monitoring, and maintenance.
- Review and approve procedures and their revisions, procurement documents, design documents, works orders, safety basis documents, and perform FP surveillances and audits of ongoing and completed activities.
- Ensure FP program requirements documents and procedures are up to date.
- Ensure all training and qualifications are up to date.
- Regular attendance is required.
- Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
- Use judgment in locating and selecting the most appropriate safety guidelines, references, and procedures.
- Follow detailed written and verbal instructions from management to perform assigned task according to established procedures.
- Execute a limited scope of specific safety practices affecting the accuracy, reliability, or acceptability of further processes or services.
- Interface with employees in the department, division, and organizations.
- Plan, coordinate, or advise on work efforts and resolve safety problems toward mutual goals.
- Provide consultation to other colleagues.
- Review contractor’s safety/fire protection in facilities, discuss, and explore new product technical applications.
