JOB SUMMARY/PURPOSE OF POSITION
The Environmental Engineer is responsible for assisting in implementing environmental requirements as imposed by DOE and other federal, state, or local regulatory agencies. The Environmental Engineer assists on projects or programs which perform environmental monitoring, regulatory review, oversight, assessment, reporting, permitting, and compliance activities. Other responsibilities include supporting chemical and radiological analysis data validation, including data management using the LIMS system.
REQUIREMENTS/SPECIFICATIONS
- BA/BS degree in Engineering, Natural Sciences, or related science fields or an equivalent combination of education and directly related experience
- Minimum of two (2) years of related experience.
- Valid driver’s license required.
- Broad knowledge of environmental theories, principles, techniques, policies, regulations, and legal requirements.
- Developed organizational and communication skills
- Knowledge of industry specific software applications
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES/SCOPE OF WORK
- Maintain a safe and healthful work environment by following established safe work practices and procedures; including following all safety rules, use of proper personal protective equipment (PPE), investigating and reporting identified safety concerns or situations.
- Adhere to standards contained in the Company “Code of Conduct,” Company EEO practices, and DOE directives.
- Assist others to develop, implement, and maintain regulatory and DOE compliance with submittals, inspection procedures and programs designed to minimize deficiencies.
- Ensure compliance with existing federal, state, and local laws, regulations, licenses, permits, and ordinances pertaining to health, safety, and environmental control at CHBWV facilities.
- Participate in environmental programs (e.g., water, air, land quality, radiological health and safety, liquid and solid waste disposal) by assisting with inspections and assessments.
- Assist in conducting scientific investigations, researching regulatory requirements, calculating impact, and providing liaison with other departments and DOE personnel.
- Assist in preparing technical reports by interpreting data, observations, and current regulations regarding inspection findings and recommendations for corrective actions.
- Assist in solving various environmental problems by applying regulatory, DOE compliance, and technical expertise and knowledge.
- Perform scientific investigations by analyzing and interpreting trends and patterns using available precedents and guidelines.
- Share information and consult with senior environmental and technical personnel in the field to assure information is obtained in a practical and economic manner.
- Keep current on specific requirements imposed by government agencies by reading statutes, regulations, licenses, and permits.
- Maintain a working knowledge on the scientific and technical aspects of various regulatory requirements and how they may impact programs and facility modifications by studying regulatory guidance documents and industry publications and by interfacing with personnel at other DOE facilities.
- Assist in maintaining records and documentation by conforming to established department and company policies and procedures for records management and support data retention capability initiatives to meet required needs.
- Provide recommendations project or site-wide for regulatory strategy or strategies to implement or maintain conformance with environmental regulatory/compliance strategies by interpreting and/or solving basic regulatory issues and communicate with personnel at more senior levels.
- Plan, coordinate, or advise on work efforts or to resolve environmental engineering problems toward mutual goals.
- Regular attendance is required.

- Work independently under general supervision exercising reasonable judgment in determining objectives of assignments according to procedures.
- Perform tasks from detailed instructions and procedures using independent judgement in locating, selecting, and applying appropriate environmental guidelines, references, and procedures.
- Provide technical direction and guidance to department and company engineers, operators, and other personnel on regulatory matters relating to environmental compliance issues or concerns.
- Participate in negotiations with other department engineers and regulators to establish appropriate levels of environmental compliance and reporting.
- Perform, identify, and analyze diverse environmental engineering responsibilities involving different and unrelated processes and methods.
- Execute a broad scope of specific environmental engineering practices affecting the accuracy, reliability, or acceptability of further processes or services.
- Provide company wide regulatory, DOE compliance, and technical guidance and direction for determining courses of action to implement or maintain conformance with environmental regulatory/compliance strategies.
